This may seem like an unusual post coming from me, as I’ve previously written only about my writing and video games. However, this is too important of an issue for me to remain silent. If anyone is reading this, please listen to what I have to say.
Today, the Supreme Court upheld the healthcare bill that has sparked so much controversy. I never truly believed they would do it. This goes far beyond mere questions of healthcare. This strikes at the heart of what our nation was founded on.
Why did people come to America, back when the United States had not yet been formed and all we had were colonies? Why have people continued to come here throughout the years? There are many reasons, but one of the most important was and is religious liberty.
This is a country where people are supposed to be free to live and practice their beliefs. No one can tell me what I can or can not believe. No one can force me to support something I consider gravely immoral.
This healthcare plan includes a mandate that will force all institutions to provide coverage for contraceptives. Yes, this even includes abortive contraceptives. Yes, this means that a religious institution that is morally opposed to abortion will be forced to cover these things in their plans.
The government feels they can now force people to go against their religious beliefs. People will be forced to support something they view as nothing less than murder, mass slaughter of the unborn. Is this religious liberty? Is this America?
We cannot stand down. Every person must stand up for his or her rights. They cannot force us to do this unless we let them. It would be better to suffer for the sake of justice than to compromise one’s soul by submitting.
Almighty God, Father of all nations,
For freedom you have set us free in Christ Jesus.
We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty,
the foundation of human rights, justice, and the common good.
Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties;
By your grace may we have the courage to defend them,
for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land.
We ask this through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness,
and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Chris,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
with whom you live and reign, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
