Operation Backlog Completion 2025
Jan 042021

To no one’s surprise, I did not complete my backlog in 2020, but of course that means it’s time for another round of Operation Backlog Completion!

Last year, I finished a massive 91 games, so this year I’m raising the goal to a terrifying 100 games.

Operation Backlog Completion 2021

That should make a dent in my backlog, even though it’s always offset by bundles, review games, and other situations that increase my backlog even as I work through it.

My goal last year also included 17 specific games I intended to play. I only actually finished three of them, but I have two more currently in progress, two were delayed, and one was removed.

So here is this year’s list, which includes the remaining games from last year’s list and my most-anticipated games of 2021.

  • Batman: Arkham Knight (followed by Arkham Origins)
  • The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings (followed by The Witcher 3)
  • Dragon Quest XI
  • Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition
  • Yooka-Laylee
  • Aurion: Curse of the Kori-Odan
  • Dies Irae
  • The Great Gaias
  • Bug Fables
  • Tales of Arise
  • Yakuza 3
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Muv-Luv Unlimited: The Day After
  • God of War sequel
  • NEO: The World Ends With You

(I also add any new games I crowdfunded that came out in the previous year. However, for 2020 that was only Chuusotsu 1.5, which I played right away, and The Wonderful 101 Remastered, which I backed largely to support it since I played the original.)

I have Bug Fables and Yakuza 3 in progress already, so maybe this will be the year I actually play my prioritized games.

What about you? Do you have any specific video game goals set for 2021?

  1. So my comment last year was that I’d play through Ace Attorney Trilogy in French, which I gave up on because it turns out it’s actually really not fun to replay text-heavy games in a language you don’t understand.

    The Three Houses routes happened.

I actually did play through Travis Strikes Again despite me saying I would not.

I’m playing Dragon Quest XI S right now, like, as I type this. Or, rather, I’m auto-playing the Slime Quest Slot game in the casino for the past 4+ hours because I have a gambling problem.
You being stuck on the non-S version is kinda… sad.

    • Yeah, I can’t imagine playing through a game like Ace Attorney in another language would be much fun unless you were trying to learn the language at the same time.

…I still haven’t even played my second Three Houses route.

Oh, I have Dragon Quest XI S, actually. I just didn’t specify in the list (and re-used the older image from when it was announced).

  2. For in-progress games:
    1. Hades – complete sidequests and additional story content.
    2. Fire Emblem: 3 Houses – Complete at least one more route. Likely Dimitri.
    3. Pokemon Sword – Catch more legendaries, see if I can complete my DLC pokedex
    4. Animal Crossing – To wean myself off the game, except for checking if Redd comes with missing art. Finish catching Deep Sea creatures.

Games I own but haven’t started:
    1. Steam games, too many to count: Try to make a dent in these. I have a lot of games I really do want to play, but never got around to. Including many games I backed on kickstarter. Want to at least do some. Not setting a specific number yet.
    2. Console games: I try to play all my console games so I don’t have too many. I know if I have a few I never got around to. Currently pretending these don’t exist. Even if they include Eternal Sonata, Captain Toad, and Dishonored 2. Currently been on my backlog so long that I feel no urgency for any of them…

New Games (or games I haven’t bought yet), in priority order:
    1. Psychonauts 2
    2. Imposter Factory
    3. NEO: The World Ends With You
    4. Tales of Arise
    5. The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe Edition
    6. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory
    7. Gnosia
    8. Twelve Minutes
    9. Bugsnax
    10. Disco Elysium

    • I feel like I’ve already started to lose steam in Animal Crossing, although I wish I’d actually developed my island a bit more first.

I’m interested in Bugsnax, but since the PS5 version was free for PS+ subscribers, I actually added it to my account so that whenever I eventually get a PS5, I should be able to download it.

      • It’s not too late to finally build a ramp…!

Bugsnax looks fun, and weird, and crazy, which is why it made the list. Though a few other games almost made it, like Carrion (though I may end up playing those anyway, depending on sales and circumstance)
