Cover art for Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire

Pokemon is an incredibly popular series. My personal favorites are SoulSilver, which got me back into the series after my long hiatus, and White, which I consider to have the best Pokemon story. I’m uncertain about Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, as they’re remakes of the generation that stands out in my memory as my least favorite. However, it was during the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald generation that I became convinced I was too old for Pokemon, so maybe it’s just that.

Last week, I received a code for the Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire demo. I downloaded it and played it. As a Pokemon demo, I didn’t like it a lot. It’s split up into tiny missions that give you rewards to transfer to your main game. It wasn’t the cohesive experience I expect from Pokemon. On the other hand, it has solid Pokemon gameplay mechanics and some great new features.

Today, I received another OR/AS demo code. I don’t need two, so I’m offering it to you, as Pokemon joins our celebration of Halloween and all things spooky.

Creepy Ghost Pokemon Yamask

Sure, Pokemon is cute and child friendly, but that doesn’t exclude it from spookiness. Ghosts, haunted houses, and some downright terrifying Pokedex entries add darkness to this otherwise lighthearted series. One of my favorites is Yamask, a Ghost-Type Pokemon with this cheerful Pokedex entry:

Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human. Sometimes they look at it and cry.

What?? That mask is holding is a human face? Yamask used to be human? This dead-human-turned-Pokemon cries over the face it’s carrying around? We’re approaching Lisa Trevor levels of creepy here…

And the games themselves sometimes get a little darker than expected, like a notable moment in Pokemon Platinum that actually made me jump.

Now it’s your turn. Leave a comment telling me your most memorable scary/disturbing moment from a Pokemon game, and you’ll be entered to win this Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire demo code! (Note, the codes are region-locked, so only enter if you’ll be able to use a US demo code.)

If you just want to comment without entering the giveaway, say so when you post.

Tweet a link to this article using the hashtag #AllThingsSpooky for additional entries.

A winner will be randomly chosen from all entries on Halloween! See you then!

Happy Halloween–a winner has been selected and the contest is over!

The-Accidental-Zombie-CoverYou might recall that back in June, I launched a contest for The Accidental Zombie. The structure was simple: you’d tell me what you would do if you accidentally created a zombie, and at the end of summer, I’d look at all the entries and choose a winner based on creativity and clarity. The prizes? A PDF copy of The Accidental Zombie so you could see how my hapless scientists handle such a situation, and your choice of a name to appear in one of my future works.

Well, the contest is over! I selected a winner, sent out the novella, and wrote down the name for a future story.

It wasn’t an easy choice to make. All of the entries had something special about them, and a few were funny enough that I laughed out loud. In the end, however, I had to narrow it down to just one.

And since the winner wanted the entry shared, let me present to you the winning answer!

My knee-jerk reaction would be to kill it. Kill it with fire. But….if I were in a malicious, world-destroying mood I would try to somehow wrangle the zombie into the back of a van and release it in a populated area. Say, at a mall when a major superhero movie is releasing so you have this zombie chowing down on people with survivors running around screaming “Where’s Superman?!?!” and then getting nommed on. Or releasing it during when a high profile zombie movie comes out; people will think its just creative advertisement and hype building, or a really enthusiastic cosplayer until arterial blood starts spraying and they realize that….its not a cosplayer.”

Malicious, world-destroying mad scientists are taking notes right now.

Congratulations to our winner! To the winner, everyone else who participated, everyone who didn’t participate but wish you had, and everyone else lurking around, thank you for your interest!

All right, so I wasn’t exactly as prompt with updates as I assumed I would be when I ended my last post. Maybe I’ll be a little better about it from here on out.

Since my last post, I’ve officially graduated from college with a Bachelor’s of Arts in English and a minor in Creative Writing. In about a week’s time, I’ll be off to Seton Hill University to enter the Writing Popular Fiction graduate program, which should be an interesting time indeed.

Once we hit July, exciting things will begin to happen! First, Wizards of the West will begin its line of promotional stories, promoting each week’s new sale while also showing the events when the Guardians were last awake…and the rise of a certain dark power. Next, July will finally take you to the small town of Dernier, whose secrets yet lay buried…

I expect to be writing quite a bit over the next few months. I’ll be working on my new novel for Seton Hill, it’ll come time to start working on the Wizards stories for August, and somewhere in there I’ll be trying to find time to write the fanfiction I’ve been promising my readers for a few years now.

Fortunately, I’ve finally finished playing Xenoblade! Once it’s placed safely in its box, it can no longer drain away hours of my time with sidequests and enchanting plots. Of course, it won’t be long before I start a different game, but still–my point still stands! Sort of.

In the meantime, remember The Accidental Zombie? Have you read it yet? No? Bah! Well, you’re in luck. Instead of calling down Lovecraftian horrors upon you, I am giving you a chance to get it for free! It’s very simple. Just tell me what you would do if you accidentally created a zombie

Update: The program is as amazing as I expected, and the contest was a success.
