I’ve been skeptical about Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon.

Not only have I yet to finish regular Pokémon Moon (I mentioned this back in August and still haven’t gone back to it), but it disappointed me that Ultra Sun and Moon aren’t sequels.

The latest story trailer, however, made me genuinely excited about these games.

That trailer is way too epic for a Pokémon game. Between the music, the content, and the bold declaration that “This isn’t the Alola you thought you knew,” it really caught my attention.

It reminded me of when I first started Pokémon White and saw the intro. My immediate reaction was to check that I really was playing Pokémon and not some other JRPG, because it seemed so cool and out of place in a series that typically had basic plots.

And if the Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon story trailer wasn’t enough, a recent interview revealed that the stories diverge early on, there is an additional post-game episode, the changes are even greater than those in Emerald and Platinum, and the overall scenario is about twice as long as that of Sun and Moon.

I was skeptical of these games because they aren’t sequels, but that sounds like a lot of added story content.

In short, the story trailer for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon won me over, and now I’m interested in these games. The only question is if I should finish Moon first.

New Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon Details Hint at Story

New Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon details have been revealed, and this time it’s a bit more substantial than a new Pokémon form.

More than anything, I’ve been hoping to learn whether these games are upgrades or sequels to Sun and Moon, so let’s take a look at the official description and see what it says.

Ultra Sun and Moon have “new additions to the story and features” of their predecessors.

Story-wise this includes “ominous dark clouds” above Alola, new buildings and landscapes, and a story about Necrozma.

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, a story unfolds on a grand scale, with the Legendary Pokémon Solgaleo, Lunala, and Necrozma at its center. Secrets about Necrozma and the Alola region—undisclosed in the previous games—will come to light.”

All of this sounds to me like it’s leaning much more toward upgrade than sequel. The new story sounds like an addition in the style of Pokémon Platinum (or the OR/AS Delta Episode), not Black/White 2.

However, the website also discusses the new character customization outfits by saying “The look of the main characters’ outfits has changed from the first trip through the Alola region—just in time for them to begin a new adventure!”

First trip? New adventure? That sounds like the sort of language that would be used for a sequel.

Meanwhile, fans have noticed some interesting details, including:

  • an area that strongly resembles Lt. Surge’s Gym
  • a glowing white figure appears both in the trailer and on the website, with half of its face pictured on Ultra Sun and half on Ultra Moon in the official box art
  • the new map includes a mysterious vortex that resembles the Distortion World vortex from Platinum

When Will We Learn More about Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon?

I still haven’t played much of Pokémon Moon.

I’ve meant to, but I keep putting it aside in favor of other games. The beginning’s slow pace has made it difficult for me to get into it, even though I enjoyed the more story-driven focus of Pokémon Black and White.

However, I’m still interested in learning more about Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, which will be out on November 17. In particular, I want to know what they are.

Are they upgraded versions of Sun and Moon? Are they sequels like Black/White 2? I had these questions when they were announced, and I still have them.

I was excited when I learned Ultra Sun and Moon news was coming over the weekend… but it was just the announcement of Dusk Form Lycanroc.

We still have a little over 3 months before Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon come out, but I hope we learn more about them before then. What do you think Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon are — and when do you think we’ll find out?
