Operation Backlog Completion 2026

Near the end of October, we also had another big JRPG announcement, a bit of an unexpected one: a new Star Ocean game is in development.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force is the sixth entry in the series, set after the events of the fifth game but still earlier than the last game in the timeline.

It stars two protagonists, Raymond (who looks significantly better in artwork than his game model) and Laeticia, and you’ll choose whose story you want to follow.

Their meeting is the spark for the game’s story, but the official blog post about the game says your choice of who to play will determine “the events that take place during the story, including the allies who’ll have your back by the end of the game.”

Exploration looks like it will be a big focus, with a lot of verticality involved since you can fly for short distances.

I’ve seen a lot of people criticizing the game’s visuals, and I don’t really get it. Aside from the character models, which I’m not crazy about, I think Star Ocean: The Divine Force looks beautiful. The environments especially stand out to me and make me want to explore this game’s world.

It’s so pretty!

Now… back in 2015, I was also pretty excited for Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, which got a fairly negative reception when it came out.

And… I still haven’t played my copy of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.

Since then, however, the first Star Ocean game was remastered, so I intend to pick up Star Ocean: First Departure R to try it ahead of this game’s release. I keep hoping they’ll remaster or port the second game in English, though, since that’s supposed to be one of the best in the series and is difficult to find nowadays.

Here’s hoping The Divine Force will be an excellent return for the series when it comes out next year! What do you think of the newest Star Ocean game from what we’ve seen so far?

Update: We’ve got the crazy name worked out. It’s actually “Charles D. Goale.”

Star-Ocean-5-spaceshipAs you know, my excitement over Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness has made me interested in playing the entire Star Ocean series… which I still haven’t done, but Star Ocean 5 continues to look great.

The latest news (thanks, Gematsu) from Square Enix is about the spaceship.

You’ll use it to travel in between worlds, but it also has shops inside and a shuttle used to access the planets.

Since I’ve never played Star Ocean, I don’t know how ships are usually handled by the series, but this sounds cool.

It looks pretty nice, too.

And the ship is called the Charles D. Goal F.

…What?

Some people have suggested this name is a pun or reference, but… I don’t know, when I read the name “Charles D. Goal F,” I don’t quite think of an awesome spaceship traveling the stars.

Square Enix revealed new details about things other than the ship, too, such as the battle system, group battles, and “private actions,” where you have conversations with party members. You can read all about it at Gematsu, while I continue to make vague plans about trying the series before Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness comes out.

…But really, the Charles D. Goal F? Really?

Star-Ocean-5

Last week, Square Enix launched a teaser site with a countdown for a new project. At the time, opinions were divided over whether it was a new Star Ocean game or if Square Enix intended to troll fans by making it look like way.

No trolling today! Square Enix and Famitsu have revealed that Star Ocean 5 is under development by tri-Ace for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is set on a distant planet called Feycreed, it is inspired directly by Star Ocean 3 (Till the End of Time), and the subtitle’s meanings will become clear when you play the game. Its producer, Kobayashi, hopes to make more Star Ocean games after this. (Thanks, Gematsu, for these details and more!)

From the few story details that have been revealed, along with the new series trailer, Star Ocean 5 looks pretty cool.

The prologue has been translated by Kotaku:

Do the depths of space forbid peace for mankind—

Centuries after leaving Earth, after a multitude of trials, with the creation and spread of the ‘Galactic Federation’, humanity was on the verge of unified order and peace.

But the embers of conflict have begun to burn again.

Over 6,000 light years from Earth, on the unsettled planet, ‘Faicreed.’

Just as so many times before, the waves of history begin from a remote planet.”

That sounds pretty interesting to me. I’ve never played a Star Ocean game, although I have Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. I’ve heard mixed things, but fans seem generally positive toward the series, especially that game. So far, reactions to Star Ocean 5’s announcement have also been positive.

New screenshots, as well as several scans, have also been revealed.

Star Ocean 5 is set in between the second and third games. From what I understand, it’s possible to play Star Ocean games on their own because they all have separate plots, but I’d still like to have more familiarity with the series before I really get excited for this one. Like a majority of my anticipated games, then, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness has reminded me to get to work on my video game backlog!

How do you feel about Star Ocean 5?
