Square Enix has released a new recap video covering the 20th anniversary event.

Most is stuff we already know about from the anniversary event, but the end of the video confirms the release date for Dark Road’s finale.

During the anniversary event, they announced that the final part of Kingdom Hearts Dark Road would be out in August, but with no news since then, that started to seem in doubt.

But it’s still on! Kingdom Hearts Dark Road will conclude with a new story update on August 26.

The video also ends with new tease of what is to come in the finale, connecting it back to the ending of KHUX.

I haven’t played Dark Road since it went offline, so I hope they haven’t geared the finale’s difficulty around the idea that you’ve been grinding this entire time. Since it’s no longer an online game, you’d think it would be significantly less grindy.

(Update: I forgot that offline mode isn’t already out, so I couldn’t have played Dark Road since then even if I wanted to! It’ll be out as part of this same update.)

While Dark Road wasn’t exactly thrilling to play, its story was interesting and I’m excited for this finale. Will you be playing the Kingdom Hearts Dark Road finale?

  1. I haven’t touched their mobile game since it launched. Could I just jump in on this, or do I need to catch up on something? How would I catch up?

    • Short answer: you can probably jump in here, but catching up on KHUX’s story might be beneficial.

      Long answer:

KHUX and Dark Road are part of the same app, but they’re treated as separate games within the app. The app has been taken offline, though, so right now you can’t play either (I was mistaken at the time I wrote my post and thought offline mode had already come out for Dark Road, but I was wrong).

So when this update comes on August 26, it will make Dark Road playable as an offline app.

For the most part, I’d say it’s fine to just jump in with Dark Road, but the latest teaser at the end of that video looks like it’s going to tie into part of KHUX’s ending. KHUX has a theater mode available within its half of the app, which is the only official way to catch up on the story now since the game is no longer playable.

However, theater mode isn’t arranged in any logical way, so if you want to watch the story through theater mode, follow the order in this guide: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lPkX2Ay7X3qnYV952ZuzfrqU2jdXc7lXjxyw94h-MaU/htmlview

An alternate method is to watch the story on Youtube. Everglow has a playlist of all the story scenes: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhcSrKyqhfh4fLr4-fzIIeeaMG2RdgPGH
Everglow also has a video that’s just the main story without the filler, which might be the best option: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68lZEYUjtRU

  2. I completely forgot about Dark Road… but I have beaten every KH game to come out so far, and I have already walked down this dark road for too long to stop now… so late August, let’s see what’s in store!

    • I remembered Dark Road in that every now and then I’d wonder when the finale was coming, but I’d actually forgotten that offline mode wasn’t out yet, as the mistake in my post shows. XD
