Operation Backlog Completion 2026
Jan 052026

Last year I switched how I was handling my yearly writing goals, and it went pretty well.

My goals for 2025 were to finish my current in-progress short story, write and submit at least two more pulp fiction stories, and continue working on short stories.

I failed that first goal but succeeded at the other two. That’s left me even more motivated heading into 2026, so here we go!

By 2027, I will:

  • Resume querying agents about my completed novels.
  • Continue writing short stories.
  • Resume submitting short stories for publication.

Yes, after taking some time to focus on short stories, I found that I’d like to resume sending queries for my novels. On top of that, my renewed short story energy means I should start submitting those again as well, something I hadn’t done since 2021. In fact, I already submitted one short story this year… and got my first rejection letter of the year.

But hey, you can’t get a story accepted if you don’t try.

For my fellow writers out there, what are your 2026 writing plans and goals?

  1. Congrats on your first rejection letter!

My writing year has gone… mixed. I did start on a new short story but haven’t finished it. More importantly, I finally got back to editing my zombie story and re-finished my third draft of part 1, and even sent it to two relatives for them to read!

However… they got busy, and I have let editing of part 2 and 3 fall by the wayside. My goal this year is to get this third draft to completion so I can send it to my two beta readers! And to finish that short story. More modest goals but even this may be a stretch for me of late.

I also plan to continue a monthly in-person write-in I’ve been organizing, which does help with my motivation a lot! I miss NaNo though 🙁
