After my editing work for the visual novel Anime Studio Simulator with Visualnoveler, I moved on to become the head writer of a new fantasy visual novel project, Ascendant Hearts.

Ascendant Hearts is a romantic comedy about a young man named Hayato who wakes up in a world that follows JRPG and MMORPG rules. Part romance, part RPG parody, part adventure, it follows Hayato as he bonds with three party members and tries to get to the bottom of the mysterious monster attacks endangering the town.

It has a lighthearted, often silly tone and doesn’t take itself too seriously, but I hope the story and characters will hold your interest as well.

Unlike Anime Studio Simulator, which was a hybrid, this one is a full visual novel. You’ll also make choices that influence your relationship with the other characters and put you on the path to one of four endings.

It has some ecchi content, but if you’re not into that, don’t worry, it shouldn’t be enough to dissuade you.

Ascendant Hearts is now on Kickstarter. You can also support it by voting for it on Steam Greenlight.

Not sure yet? We’ve made a short demo, which you can download here.

Since I’m the writer of Ascendant Hearts, ask me any questions you have about the project, especially if it’s about the story or characters. And if you enjoy romantic comedy visual novels and RPG parodies, please support us on Kickstarter!

A new Kickstarter has begun to localize the highly-acclaimed visual novel Dies Irae.

Dies Irae is described as “an urban fantasy battle opera,” although I’ve also heard people say its tone is quite literary.

From my understanding, a secret group of men and women known as the Longinus Dreizehn Orden perform a dark ritual during Berlin’s fall in 1945. Several decades later, in the modern era, they return and start the apocalypse.

It sounds very crazy and very interesting, and people say the villains (who are… superpowered Nazi sorcerers/demons?) are one of the game’s main highlights.

The Kickstarter is to translate the game and release it on Steam in two parts. Part 1 will have Kasumi and Marie’s routes, and Part 2 will have Kei and Rea’s routes. It takes 60+ hours to go through the whole thing, so each half will be quite substantial. According to the Q&A, choices will not be altered. You can still make choices in Part 1 that relate to a route only in Part 2, even though the Part 1 routes are your only options.

It will uncensor the violent scenes that were censored in the Japanese release, and there will also be an 18+ patch released later if you’re concerned about that. Finally, they’re hoping to release a digital PS Vita version as a stretch goal.

Currently, the Kickstarter is a bit over halfway to its funding goal.

I haven’t backed it yet, because I’m a little wary of those “literary” comments. Literary fiction and I often don’t get along. On the other hand, it sounds cool and I watched (read) some of the prologue and it seemed interesting.

What are your thoughts on Dies Irae? Are you going to back its localization? And if you’ve already played it, share your thoughts on it in the comments below. Convince me!

Update: I went for it.

hatoful-boyfriend-king-plushie-addonThe second Hatoful Boyfriend Plush Project Kickstarter has almost met its goal, and two new add-ons are available!

If you (like me) backed the project too late to get the limited edition plushie of The King, you can now get your own King plush by adding $15 to your pledge.

Look at him. He needs a hug.

This is not the same as the limited edition plushie. The $15 add-on is for the version of the King you see through the majority of Holiday Star, while the limited edition version appears to be his true form shown at the end.

Next, they announced a special holiday add-on featuring Miru and Kaku, along with two hats. Yes, hats.

The Miru & Kaku bundle includes not only includes plushies of the two troublesome little… creatures… but also winter pom pom hats styled after Sakuya and Nageki. You can get them by adding $30 to your pledge, although unfortunately it doesn’t appear that Miru and Kaku are being offered alone.

If you’ve played Hatoful Boyfriend and you’re wondering who in the world these three characters are, they’re from the sequel, Holiday Star. Take a look at my Holiday Star review for more details.

Remember, in addition to Holiday Star characters, this project includes secondary Hatoful Boyfriend characters like Ryuuji, Azami, and Hitori.

After this project, I’ll have plushies of Kazuaki, Hitori, Kazuaki-kun, and the King. It doesn’t get much more confusing than that.

Check out the Kickstarter page to make your pledge and get some more bird plushies!
