A State of Play has been announced for June 2!

With Summer Game Fest being set for June 5, it looks like this showcase will kick off our “Not E3” season this year again.

It will start at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET and last over an hour.

States of Play are pretty hit or miss for me, but a whole hour of announcements makes it more likely that it’ll have some in there that I’m excited about. The only confirmed game is Marvel’s Wolverine, but that should leave plenty of time.

And it could be a potential place to see Kingdom Hearts IV. Even though it’s probably not an exclusive, Kingdom Hearts has been a prominent enough series on PlayStation consoles that it would be a heavy-hitter for a State of Play. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

So far, the State of Play, Summer Game Fest, Xbox Games Showcase, and the PC Gaming Show have all been announced for in and around and the first week of June, so our schedule is starting to come together. Here’s hoping Nintendo is the next one to announce a show.

What are you hoping for from the State of Play?

I can’t believe we’re talking about Summer Game Fest already.

It feels like we’re still near the start of 2026, and Summer Game Fest is all the way in the summer!

But we’re in the second half of May, Summer Game Fest is near the start of June, and that means it’s not that far off after all.

Summer Game Fest will start on June 5 (although I think there are some showcases ahead of it), and since it’s effectively filled the void left by E3, we should have a lot of exciting announcements to look forward to.

So… what am I looking forward to?

It surprised me to realize there aren’t a whole lot of games I’m eagerly awaiting news on right now. From my top 5 most-anticipated games of the year, Tomodachi Life and Dark Ties are already out, and there’s no way Over RequiemZ will be shown. That leaves Control: Resonant, which is a safe bet but not one I’m dying for news about, and Danganronpa 2×2, which…

All right, I guess that’s my big hope right now: more information about Danganronpa 2×2. I can see it happening, especially if Nintendo holds a showcase around the same time as Summer Game Fest like they often do.

We just had the Stranger Than Heaven deep dive, so while it might get a new trailer, I don’t need to see more right now.

What about some new announcements? Like I mentioned earlier this month, an announcement of Final Fantasy Remake Part 3 at Summer Game Fest actually feels plausible. Meanwhile, I hope Kingdom Hearts IV is a reasonable prediction. It’s been four years!

Summer Game Fest would be a good place for the accidentally-leaked Tales of Eternia remaster, too, although I’d love it if they announced a new Tales game. And of course, I’ll be crossing my fingers for Ace Attorney news, like I always do.

Finally, I’m hoping to see the next game from Monolith Soft if Nintendo has a showcase. While my feelings on Xenoblade Chronicles 3 were a little more mixed than usual, I’m really looking forward to seeing what their next game will be.

What are you hoping to see at Summer Game Fest this year?

Miscellaneous

We’ve pretty much come to the end of the showcases, so all that remains is to cover a few miscellaneous highlights from the other showcases throughout the weekend. First up, I only mentioned Blighted in passing during the Summer Game Fest post, but after getting a closer look at it later on, it interests me more than I expected. The devs also said it has metroidvania elements, so I’m curious about that.

Then there’s Death and Faeology, which looks like an intriguing murder mystery.

Prison of Husks also seems interesting. Yes, we’ve seen a lot of souls-likes, but this one has a old PS1 sort of aesthetic that makes it stand out.

Wander Stars looks interesting, and I was excited to see a new trailer for Tormented Souls II. I loved the first game, and the sequel looks excellent so far.

And speaking of horror games, Shadow Sacrament: The Roots of Evil caught my attention as well.

A.I.L.A. is another horror game that stood out to me from the showcases.

And while not horror despite its spooky aesthetic, the action-adventure game Nightmare Circus looks like it could be a lot of fun.

I also enjoyed seeing the 3D platformer Junklands and the delightfully titled Schrodinger’s Cat Burglar. Schrodinger’s Cat Burglar describes itself as “a puzzle heist adventure with a quantum flavour” and “Portal with cats,” and if that doesn’t say it all, I don’t know what does. It looks pretty neat.

Finally, I enjoyed watching the trailers for Ayasa: Shadows of Silence, which reminds me a lot of Little Nightmares, and also the puzzle adventure game Ascend. Both of those look like games to keep an eye on.

So while there weren’t a lot of big-name titles that stood out to me from this year’s showcases, it’s nice to have some indie highlights here and there as well.

Meanwhile, that brings us to the end of this year’s Not-E3 (although Konami is having a showcase later this week and Koei Tecmo is hosting a live stream about Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian) unless Nintendo decides to hold a Nintendo Direct this week after all. What were your biggest highlights from the event?
