Operation Backlog Completion 2026

Last year, the Utawarerumono series saw a new entry, a turn-based JRPG called Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten.

Only the PC version was localized, with no sign of the PS4 and PS5 versions coming west.

Well, that has changed. Yesterday, NISA announced that Monochrome Mobius would be released in the west for PS4/PS5 this fall. They also revealed a Limited Edition available for preorder.

(The website lists a smaller Deluxe Edition, as well, but preorders aren’t up yet. Initially, the website also listed an English dub, but that was an error and has since been removed.)

I already have Monochrome Mobius on Steam, but I have to admit I’m tempted by the art book, soundtrack, etc. included in the Limited Edition. Is it worth picking it up for collection purposes? We’ll see. Maybe I’ll have played Monochrome Mobius by then.

Earlier this year, I finished playing Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and found it to be a compelling start to the story told across the two Mask entries. This Monochrome Mobius news has sparked my interest in starting Mask of Truth sooner rather than later.

Getting news like this from NISA, along with other announcements from various developers over the past couple of months, has made me miss the New Game Plus Expo that was held in March the past two years. There are several games and release dates that felt like they would have been announced there if it had been held this March as well. The New Game Plus Expo often showcased games that appeal to me, so I hope they’re just planning to hold it later this year (like in 2020, when it was in June).

Anyway, are you interested in Monochrome Mobius? If you already played it on Steam, are you planning to pick up a console copy?

Monochrome Mobius, the upcoming new entry in the Utawarerumono series, has been delayed.

While originally planned for a September 8 release, it has now been pushed to October 20.

That’s not too bad of a delay, although it makes the crush of game releases at the end of October even worse than it was before.

The official website for Monochrome Mobius was also updated with new character details.

Curiously, it still appears that the PC version is the only one being localized. Maybe that will change, but so far no one has said a word about localizing the PS4 and PS5 versions. It has a global release date, but only for the PC.

I’d say I’d use this additional time to catch up on the Utawarerumono series, but we all know that’s unlikely to happen, especially with Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on the way. Still, I’m looking forward to getting caught up on the series eventually and then seeing how their venture into regular JRPG territory with Monochrome Mobius turns out.

(You know, I really thought we were going to be talking about Nier today, but the great church mystery turned out to be a reveal of modding tools. So we’re talking about Monochrome Mobius instead.)

From what I understand, Monochrome Mobius is an interquel set after Prelude to the Fallen but before the two Mask games, but I don’t know if it would be okay to play out of order or not. Just in case, I’ll stick with release order and play Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth before Monochrome Mobius.

Is it just me, or are a lot of exciting game releases starting to bunch together this year? Is Monochrome Mobius on that list of exciting upcoming games for you?

As we hoped, yesterday brought Utawarerumono news regarding the upcoming new title, Monochrome Mobius.

Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten will launch worldwide on September 8.

Now, when it comes to platforms, things seem a little strange. In Japan, it’s been announced for PS4, PS5, and PC. However, it appears that only the PC version is being localized.

The official English website lists it for Steam, with early purchase bonuses of a digital art book and soundtrack. Shiravune is publishing it, and I think they’ve only published PC games in the past, but no other publisher has said anything about the console versions.

So there’s a good chance we’re only getting Monochrome Mobius in English on PC, at least for the time being.

(This makes me wonder about how Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth were delisted from PSN when their licenses expired, and the licenses have yet to be renewed. Do these games sell poorly on consoles?)

Anyway, the news came alongside a Monochrome Mobius trailer, so let’s take a look.

Like we suspected when it was first announced, Monochrome Mobius doesn’t feature strategy RPG battles like its predecessors. Instead, it appears to have regular turn-based combat.

It probably won’t be a visual novel, either, since we see a lot of 3D cutscenes in the trailer. However, the website and Steam page still put the primary focus on the story, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it still has a similar setup of being mostly story with battles interspersed between.

Monochrome Mobius is set ahead of Mask of Deception, so I’ll wait until I’ve played Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth before getting to Monochrome Mobius. I’m still exciting for it, though, because it looks great!

What do you think of Monochrome Mobius from what we’ve seen so far?
