Operation Backlog Completion 2025

Konami has announced another Suikoden Live broadcast, set for August 5 at 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET.

(I think I’ll catch this one after the fact.)

The last Suikoden broadcast back in March was unintentionally comedic, as they said the Suikoden I & II remasters were only Step 1 of Suikoden’s revival and then proceeded to announce three different parts of Step 2: an anime, a gacha game, and a stage play.

Expecting the announcement of another remaster or Suikoden VI while they kept announcing new things that weren’t that, all while being part of Step 2, made it a bizarre experience.

They’ll probably follow up with more details on those things in this next live stream, but I hope there will be some new announcements as well. Since I don’t care much for gacha games, I’m very skeptical about Star Leap. I’d be much happier over the reveal of a regular new game or a Suikoden III remaster.

The broadcast is supposed to last an hour and a half, so that’s enough time that hoping for a new announcement doesn’t feel unreasonable. Maybe they’ll finally reveal Step 3 of their plan.

What do you expect from next week’s Suikoden live stream?

The Suikoden I & II HD Remaster is out tomorrow, and Konami held a special Suikoden broadcast on Monday to celebrate.

It was hard not to hope they’d announce a remaster of Suikoden III or a brand-new game, especially when they said the Suikoden I & II remaster was only the first step of their Suikoden plans.

Then they announced Step 2…… which turned out to be an anime.

Suikoden: The Anime is an anime adaptation of Suikoden II and will be produced by Konami Animation. It’s not the news I was hoping for, but it was neat to see.

After that, they said the anime was only the first part of Step 2. Step 2 also includes a new game… for mobile devices.

All right, that was the part that hurt, especially because Suikoden: Star Leap actually looks beautiful. If this was a regular game, I’d be excited for it without question. But it’s going to be a mobile gacha game, and even though they claimed the gacha is just an additional aspect that you don’t have to worry about, I’m too skeptical to accept it that easily.

Is there a chance I’ll give Star Leap a chance? Sure, if it comes out and people say the gacha really is non-intrusive, I might give it a try after all. I would much rather see a regular, non-gacha game come out, though.

They also announced a stage play as the final part of Step 2.

Well, this does leave the door open for a “Step 3” that could include more remasters or a new (non-mobile) game, but it was a little disappointing (if funny) to watch them keep announcing other things instead.

For my part, though, I’m still at the very start of the series. I played and enjoyed Suikoden back in 2016, but I never got around to starting Suikoden II before the remasters were announced. I’ll probably play the remaster, since it seems to be well-received. Maybe by then, it’ll be time for Step 3?

What do you think about the latest Suikoden announcements?

With TGS approaching in less than a month, it might have occurred to you that it’s been a long time since we heard anything about the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster announced at TGS 2022.

Indeed, despite it being announced with a 2023 release window, we’ve heard next to nothing since then.

We finally have an update now, although it’s unfortunately a delay. Konami announced that additional time is needed to work on the Suikoden remasters, so they won’t be out this year after all.

I was surprised when I read that, because a year since the announcement already felt like a long time for a remaster.

However, since they were not only remastering the graphics but also making improvements to the gameplay and translation, I can see how it might take longer than a more straightforward remaster. Hopefully this delay means the eventual release of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster will be a high-quality product.

It’s a bit ironic, though, that this follows the news from a month ago that Eiyuden Chronicle was also delayed to 2024. Suikoden and its spiritual successor just can’t be separated, it seems.

Like I said in my reaction to the Eiyuden Chronicles news, this is fine with me. I have a lot of games in my backlog to play while I wait, after all.

Speaking of which, the Suikoden announcements were a welcome surprise at TGS last year. Here’s hoping we have many new exciting announcements on the way this year!
