Operation Backlog Completion 2024

In 2017, we discussed the long silence concerning Fiona Frightening, a 3D platformer that had been planned for the 3DS and Wii U.

The most recent update had been from March 2017, when the developers said they were waiting for the demo to be finished.

Every now and then I search for news, and today I saw that the TV Tropes page said the creator posted on September 19, 2018 that development of Fiona Frightening had been halted.

And when I clicked the link to read the delay/cancellation announcement… it had been deleted.

However, it isn’t completely gone. It was a DeviantArt journal entry, and previews of it are still readable on DeviantArt. So when I dug further and found people discussing the game’s status, I was able to see what the original journal announcement said:

So, for several months now; I’ve had commenters asking questions all along the lines of ‘How’s Fiona Frightening coming along?’ And it’s only after a lot of thought, soul searching and attempting to contact folks involved with no response, that I have to announce this. As of now, according to my knowledge, development has been halted indefinitely, if not permanently.”

The journal entry goes on to explain the problems they ran into in more detail. Basically, the programmers they hired kept leaving, which stalled their progress, and then he lost contact with the producer of the studio. The preview ends there, so the rest of the announcement has been lost.

However, then I looked up the studio, Azurous Studios… and what did I find but their official announcement of the game’s cancellation.

It also cites the issues with programmers and concludes with a wish that they’ll be able to revisit Fiona Frightening someday.

(My guess is that the announcement from the studio is why the creator deleted his own post about it.)

I was excited for Fiona Frightening was it was first revealed, and I kept hoping they’d return even after their long silence. Unfortunately, it looks like Fiona Frightening is gone for good.

In other news, we have a Patreon now! This is sort of experimental; Patreon is changing the way it handles fees for creators starting on May 7, so if you’re interested in making one, doing so before then is the best option. Since I’ve debated about it in the past, I decided to go for it.

Anyway, if you want to support this site and my other sites (although buying my fiction is always the best option), the Patreon page is up!

Routine isn’t the only game I was looking forward to that disappeared from view. What happened to Fiona Frightening?

Fiona Frightening and the Wicked Wardrobe was a 3D platformer in the style of Banjo-Kazooie, and it was planned for the Wii U.

The story followed a witch named Fiona who used “Monsdresses” from her monster allies to fight an evil Boogieman trying to rewrite the story to make himself the winner. It sounded like a cute and spooky game, perfect for this time of year.

In 2015, I thought they might have a demo ready in time for Halloween, and earlier this year I included it on my list of best upcoming 3D platformers.

Now, the chances of it still coming out for the Wii U are pretty slim, but is it coming out for anything else instead? (They mentioned their interest in the Switch.) What happened to this game?

Fortunately, it appears Fiona Frightening hasn’t been cancelled yet. While the official Fiona Frightening Facebook page has been quiet ever since July 2016, they responded this March to say they were waiting for the demo to be completed.

And… they must still be waiting.

It’s hard not to worry about Fiona Frightening and the Wicked Wardrobe, especially since they’ve gone for such long periods of time without anything to show. Still, at least it’s not officially cancelled yet.

What do you think? Will we eventually get to see (and play) Fiona Frightening?

A year ago, we discussed an upcoming Wii U 3D platformer called Fiona Frightening and the Wicked Wardrobe.

Fiona Frightening isn’t ready to be released yet, as the developers are still gathering demo funds through an art commission project, but the official Facebook page used this month to highlight “turnaround” art to show the enemies, Monsdresses, and other characters from all sides.

Waxworth turnaround from Fiona Frightening

Here’s Waxworth, a ghostly knight voiced by Linkara.

Waxworth may be my favorite, but you can check out the rest of the Fiona Frightening art on the Facebook page. Many characters have been featured all month long, and more are still being revealed.

So, what’s this about art commissions?

The creators of Fiona Frightening intend to release a playable demo before the Kickstarter begins. However, they need funds to create the demo, and they’ve decided to raise them through art commissions. You can commission artwork of any Fiona Frightening character for $10, and the artwork will not only be released now, but also appear in the in-game gallery.

We’ve seen a small resurgence of 3D platformers lately, and this sounds like one of the most intriguing. If you want to bring us a step closer to getting a playable demo (maybe even in time to give us something spooky to play for Halloween), commission some art or just spread the word about Fiona Frightening and the Wicked Wardrobe.
