Operation Backlog Completion 2025

Five years after its unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign, the 3D platformer Clive ‘N’ Wrench is finally coming out!

Clive ‘N’ Wrench is a 3D platformer inspired by games like Jak & Daxter and Spyro. It stars a rabbit and monkey duo on a time-traveling journey through 11 worlds (and a hub world) to stop the evil Dr. Daucus.

It will be released not only on the PC but also the Switch sometime in winter 2020. (I’ve seen people arguing that winter 2020 just ended, but I think it’s safe to say the developers mean Q4 2020.)

Last year, I played the public alpha demo and found it to be quite promising despite some rough spots and a frustrating camera. Hopefully those issues have been ironed out for the final build.

According to publisher Numskull Games, Clive ‘N’ Wrench will be available both physically and digitally. A new trailer is out now.

After all this time, I’m thrilled to see Clive ‘N’ Wrench being completed. I’m still disappointed over the cancellation of Fiona Frightening. It looks like Lobodestroyo came back from the dead, however. And another 3D platformer we discussed around the same time, Happy Hell, got a new demo last month!

Speaking of demos, I enjoyed the demos for both Trials of Mana and the Resident Evil 3 remake, and I intended to blog about them until I saw the news about Clive ‘N’ Wrench. Since we’ve been following Clive ‘N’ Wrench for so long, I wanted to highlight that first.

It’s been a long time since we talked about Clive ‘N’ Wrench.

This indie 3D platformer had a Kickstarter campaign back in 2015 that didn’t succeed, but unlike the other 3D platformer we were talking about at the time, the game’s development remained active, with frequent updates on Twitter and Patreon.

Now the first public alpha demo of Clive ‘N’ Wrench is available.

This demo includes part of the hub world, two of the game’s levels (“The Chimp, the Bag and the Bunny” and “Bunny, I Shrunk the Chimp”), and one boss battle. Right now it only has controller support, with mouse & keyboard support to follow.

I tried out the demo and found it to have a lot of promise, even though being in alpha means it’s still a little rough.

First off, it just looks beautiful. The character models are great for this style of game, and everything feels like an homage to classic 3D platformers like Banjo-Kazooie, which is exactly what I signed up for.

It was fun to dive into, and I really liked the world design. The music also sounded like it came straight out of those older games.

On the other side of things, the camera gave me the most issues. That’s partly because I couldn’t find an option to invert the camera, but it also seemed to have a mind of its own, zooming in way too close or pulling far back at certain points despite my attempts to control it. While the controls were generally good, jumping got a little strange and floaty whenever I’d try to pull myself up onto a platform.

But this is just an alpha demo, so the game still has a long way to go. From what I played here, I think Clive ‘N’ Wrench will be a fantastic throwback to classic 3D platformers once it’s been polished.

If you enjoyed my post on upcoming 3D platformers, you were probably interested in my subsequent 3D platformer posts as well.

One of the games I discussed, Clive ‘N’ Wrench (called Clive and the Stones of the Ancient Bunnies at the time) didn’t have its Kickstarter going at the time I wrote about it, but it does now.

Clive-N-Wrench

Clive and Wrench themselves have undergone a bit of a change since we last saw them, with their character models changed slightly to make them look friendlier. We’ve also learned some new details about the world structure, such as the giant celestial clock that serves as the hub world, with doors to 10 worlds in different eras.

The game has 18 more days to make its £25,000 goal, so head on over to the Kickstarter page to learn more about it and maybe even help it out.

Meanwhile, I still don’t know anything about the eventual Fiona Frightening Kickstarter, but you can now listen to the theme song. It’s pretty awesome and has a definite Nightmare Before Christmas vibe.

What do you think about these two 3D platformers?
