Operation Backlog Completion 2026
May 142021

May 27 is the 35th anniversary of Dragon Quest, and Square Enix has announced a special Dragon Quest live stream to celebrate.

Not only that, but it will be translated live, so we’ll be able to watch it in English as well.

According to the full details translated by Gematsu, the broadcast will have two parts. The first part will feature updates on current Dragon Quest games, such as Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest Tact.

The second part will focus then on “the newest lineup,” to be announced by series creator Yuji Horii.

Between it being the 35th anniversary and the broadcast being translated live, it sounds like they expect it to be a big deal. Therefore, it seems likely that Dragon Quest XII will be revealed (especially since it’s been confirmed to be in development).

A new Dragon Quest Monsters was also announced a while back, but nothing has been said about it since.

It’s also revived hopes for an offline version of Dragon Quest X (the most likely way we’d get it in the west) and ports or remasters of the DS/3DS Dragon Quest games that have become quite difficult to find in recent years.

Whatever they announce, it has the potential to be an exciting event for Dragon Quest fans! (Meanwhile, I still need to play Dragon Quest XI… among others.)

The live stream is set for May 27 at 8:30 PM PDT / 11:30 PM EDT. What do you hope to see announced there?

I had a busy weekend thanks to two exciting book signings, so no new horror games to discuss today. Instead, let’s talk about some recent news regarding the Dragon Quest series.

Dragon Quest has seen many more localization recently, but the one exception that stands out is Dragon Quest X.

Unlike the rest, Dragon Quest X is an MMORPG.

In Japan, it’s appeared on a ton of systems (Wii, Wii U, 3DS, Switch, PS4, PC, iOS, and Android), but it’s never seen a western release. Managing the servers for an MMORPG in a series like Dragon Quest in the west probably just doesn’t seem profitable enough to Square Enix.

However, in a recent conversation translated here by Gematsu, the game’s former producer Yosuke Saito mentioned the possibility of bringing an offline version of Dragon Quest X to the west.

Dragon Quest series producer Yuu Miyake agreed, saying, “Since Dragon Quest X has tons of rich stories, I would like to make something that can tell those stories, including to players overseas.”

Both referenced its storytelling as a reason to make an offline version, and I’ve seen many players describe Dragon Quest X as a very solo-friendly MMORPG. It’s also notable that Miyake’s comment specifically references the idea of bringing it overseas.

If Dragon Quest X had a chance to be localized as an offline, single-player version of the game, that would be fantastic news. (Especially for someone like me, who prefers offline games anyway.) What do you think? After all these years, is there a chance Dragon Quest X will come west?

We’ve been eagerly awaiting Dragon Quest XI news, and now it has a western release date: Dragon Quest XI will be out for the PS4 and PC (Steam) on September 4 in North America and Europe.

What about the mysterious Switch version? Well, Square Enix told IGN that it is coming “much later,” although it is planned for the west.

Sadly, the 3DS version isn’t being localized.

That’s disappointing to me, because the 3DS version’s two styles looked really cool. On the other hand, I’m perfectly fine with the PS4 version (which the PC version should be like) ever since we learned for sure that it is turn-based.

Dragon Quest XI’s western release will also include English voice acting, a hard mode called Draconian Quest, improved UI and menus, a Camera Mode, and a Dash function, in addition to other improvements.

Let’s check out some newly-released English gameplay footage.

Okay, 3DS version or not, I’m definitely getting this.

There will also be a special edition of the PS4 version sold through the Square Enix Store, but details haven’t been announced yet. PlayStation Store pre-orders will give you a PS4 theme along with some sort of in-game content.

Are you excited for Dragon Quest XI? Which platform are you planning to get it for?
