Operation Backlog Completion 2026

I was planning to review King’s Quest VI today, but I woke up to such an explosion of video game news, we need to cover that first.

Not too long ago, we heard news that the development team behind the Yakuza series was working on a new IP, and today they announced Project Judge. Not only that, but it’s already been confirmed for localization in 2019.

Project Judge looks a lot like a Yakuza game, except it follows an ex-lawyer who becomes a private detective.

From the story trailer, it looks like it will have an intense main story, and the gameplay trailer also teases the sort of wacky sub-stories found in the Yakuza games. It also features investigations, since you’re playing a detective.

All in all, the two trailers made Project Judge one of my new most-anticipated games. It looks fantastic!

Square Enix also came out with a ton of exciting news today.

First, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is being remastered for the Switch and PS4. I played the original Crystal Chronicles on the GameCube, but I never finished it. I’ve actually been thinking about it lately, so this remaster is great news.

Even more exciting, they released a new Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer that shows the Big Hero 6 world for the first time, along with some tiny story teases.

And this isn’t even the full trailer! Apparently an extended version is coming on September 18.

Finally, Square Enix also showed the first teaser trailer for Project Prelude Rune, which we just discussed recently. While it starts with concept art, it also includes a short glimpse of the game and a character who is presumably the protagonist.

And moving on from Square Enix, Bandai Namco revealed the release date for Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition. It will be out on January 11, 2019.

I was hoping for a 2018 release date, but this is fine (although a bit too close to Kingdom Hearts). A special edition will also be available.

There was a lot more news besides this, but these are the highlights that stood out to me. What do you think?

And for some personal JRPG news, don’t forget to support Destiny Chronicles, our action RPG currently on Kickstarter!

One of my biggest hopes for Kingdom Hearts 3 is that it will be longer than the previous Kingdom Hearts games.

I love Kingdom Hearts, but by RPG standards, they aren’t really that long. With Kingdom Hearts 3 wrapping up the Dark Seeker Saga and dealing with so many characters, I kept wishing it would be more on par with major JRPG lengths.

Well, it sounds like I might get my wish.

A preview article from Geek.com says:

Kingdom Hearts 3 is around 40-50 hours if you stay on the critical path. Including the mini-games, players can expect 80+ hours of content.”

40-50 hours for the main story, and over 80 hours if you include side content? That sounds great!

Now, it’s unclear how official this estimate is. While the writer mentions a Square Enix PR representative answering questions, he doesn’t directly say the representative gave him that number. Some fans believe he came up with the estimate himself based on how long the demo was.

Update: He clarified that he was told this as an estimate, but Square Enix hasn’t finalized the game’s length yet.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that companies do overestimate game lengths at times… World of Final Fantasy’s director said the story would take 100 hours to complete, and while World of Final Fantasy is a delightful game and I want a sequel, it took me a bit over 50 hours with some side content.

But it’s still encouraging to hear a playtime estimate for Kingdom Hearts 3 that is notably higher than previous entries in the series. I hope it will be a long, epic conclusion to the saga.

Meanwhile, a Riku Nendoroid has also been revealed!

How long do you think (or want) Kingdom Hearts 3 to be?

Kingdom Hearts III has been featured in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu, and thanks to translations from KH13 and Gematsu, we’ve learned lots of new things.

One part that stood out to me the most was that Nomura is concerned that Kingdom Hearts III’s high volume might cause capacity problems.

I’ve been hoping it will be a long game, so that sounds promising.

He also confirmed a “secret movie,” which most likely refers to the sort of secret endings past Kingdom Hearts games have had.

There are a lot of new gameplay details discussing mini-games, Keyblade techniques, and more.

The most confusing part is a discussion of the former Organization XIII members. One translation made it sound as though they were all back as humans, but a later translation sounds like the members of the new Organization (Xigbar, Marluxia, etc.) came back as humans but then became Nobodies again, possibly in a different way than usual.

Hopefully that will be clearer in the game itself.

Finally, Nomura touched on the topic of DLC and said that he’d like to expand the gameplay through DLC, with standalone DLC after they complete the main game. That sounds like they’ll focus on making the main game complete before they do anything else, so I’m not opposed to DLC in that context.

I can’t wait to play Kingdom Hearts III. The delay to January was disappointing, but it’s still not far off. Remember, if you want to catch up on the story before Kingdom Hearts III, I’ve detailed the best order to play the Kingdom Hearts games. Every game is important!

Are you looking forward to Kingdom Hearts III? What do you think is up with the former Nobodies?
