Operation Backlog Completion 2024

Last week, we finally got new details about the Layton anime first announced in October.

According to the new information, the anime is based on Layton’s Mystery Journey and will star Katrielle Layton.

It will be a “high-speed comical mystery-solving story,” and it sounds like it might tell an original story instead of adapting the game, although that isn’t entirely clear.

Back in October, they said it would be a 26-episode series, but this new information listed it at 50 episodes. That’s pretty impressive!

The movie, Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, was pretty entertaining, if a bit convoluted due to cramming a Layton plot into less than two hours. 50 anime episodes should give the show a much better pace, especially if it focuses on smaller mysteries.

I wonder if it will include puzzles.

There will also be a manga adaptation of the anime, as well as “stylish goods.” Both are due out in spring 2018. I’ll try to play Layton’s Mystery Journey before then!

What are your hopes for the upcoming Layton anime?

Ever since I got into the Professor Layton series, new Professor Layton games have been immediate pre-orders for me.

However, I decided to wait for the 3DS version of Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy in October. Since the iOS and Android version came out last week, that means there will be a few months here before I can play the newest Layton game.

It’s frustrating to know there’s a new Layton game out there that I’m not playing, but it also lets me see other fans’ reactions to it… and so far, those reactions have been pretty good.

I was excited for the game when it was announced as Lady Layton, and the eventual screenshots that showed the traditional gameplay encouraged me, but there were still concerns. It’s the start of a new series. It has a new protagonist. It has a different tone.

Could Layton’s Mystery Journey meet the standard set by the previous games?

So far, the reviews have been pretty positive. I’ve seen a few criticisms of the story not being as exciting (and some complaints that it’s too expensive for a mobile game, but come on) but so far people seem to really love Layton’s Mystery Journey.

I hope I’ll feel the same when I play it in October. What about you? If you’re a Layton fan, have you started the new game right away, or are you holding out for the 3DS release?

In an E3 interview with Nintendo Life, Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino shed more light on the new structure of Layton’s Mystery Journey and where he sees the series going from here.

The reason the new game stars Katrielle instead of Professor Layton is because they wanted to focus more on everyday mysteries instead of epic, world-saving adventures.

Hino thought it would feel strange to take Professor Layton back to more mundane mysteries after all that, and instead decided to “bring in a new character, and then maybe scale up in the same way Layton did, where we start with small mysteries and then maybe five or six games later have a much bigger mystery.”

Five or six games later?

That’s right, this isn’t the end of the Layton series by any means. We’d wondered if Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy would be the start of a new series, especially once it adopted that title instead of Lady Layton, and it is.

Kat won’t necessarily be the protagonist for all of the games, but they do intend to make more Mystery Journey games.

(Also, this just occurred to me. Mystery Journey, Mystery Room? Could there be a connection there after all?)

Not only that, but we might get another Layton movie, too. After Professor Layton and the Eternal Movie, there were rumors of a second movie. Now, Hino says a new movie in the series is “being looked into.”

Finally, while there aren’t any new Layton crossovers in the works, he mentioned that they have “a good relationship with Capcom.” Who knows, maybe the Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright characters will return someday in a new game.

It’s exciting to hear that Layton’s Mystery Journey is the start of a new Layton series. It will also have a stronger emphasis on solving puzzles, with more puzzles than in any previous Professor Layton game. Remember, the worldwide mobile release and Japanese 3DS release is next month, with the localized 3DS release to follow in the fall.
