I am ridiculously excited for NEO: The World Ends With You, and I even started playing The World Ends With You: Final Remix alongside watching the anime to refresh my memory ahead of the sequel’s launch.

Playing Final Remix reminded me of a lot of small things that made the game fun that I’d like to see return in NEO… and it looks like I’m in luck!

New details about NEO: The World Ends With You were recently revealed, so let’s look at some of the highlights!

First, I want to talk about Threads. In The World Ends With You, the clothes you were not only functioned as equipment, but also had additional bonuses depending on how popular its brand was in a particular area. Fighting battles with a particular brand equipped would also increase that brand’s popularity there.

It’s not clear if that aspect is returning in NEO or not (although the different brands certainly are), but clothes now have special abilities and bonuses that are activated if your Style stat is high enough.

Then there’s food! In The World Ends With You, eating food and then fighting a certain number of battles to digest it rewarded you with permanent stat boosts. A similar system is returning in NEO, and since the screenshot shows that each food item has a certain number of calories listed, that’s probably the successor to the “bytes” system that determined how long food would take to digest and how much food you could eat each real-world day.

Square Enix also revealed Fret’s unique psych, an ability called “Remind.” This lets you play a short mini-game to reassemble the pieces of a memory someone has forgotten.

The World Ends With You didn’t have something like that specifically, but it makes me think about imprinting memes and playing Reaper Creeper, both of which let you interact with characters to guide them toward a specific goal. We also know Rindo can rewind time, and since the word “Remind” appears behind Fret in the recently-revealed opening movie, there’s a good chance that “Dive” appearing behind Nagi means she has a unique power as well.

Meanwhile, Square Enix also revealed several new characters on the various teams in NEO: The World Ends With You, because teams of players face off against each other in “Turf Wars” and other missions to see which team will come out on top at the end of the week and get their wish granted, while the team in last place will be erased.

I find it very interesting that the Reaper’s Game seems to be following new rules in NEO, and I can’t wait to see how the story plays out.

What are your thoughts on NEO: The World Ends With You so far? Are there any specific systems from the original game that you’d like to see return?

I still can’t believe we’re actually getting a sequel to The World Ends With You.

It’s not a pipe dream or a faint hope anymore; NEO: The World Ends With You is really happening.

I’ve been excited for it ever since it was first announced, and it’s currently my #1 most-anticipated game of 2021.

Now, alongside the start of the TWEWY anime, we’ve gotten new details, another trailer, and a release date for the upcoming sequel.

NEO: The World Ends With You will be out on July 27 for the Switch, PS4, and PC (via the Epic Games Store only, at least for now).

A special edition was announced for Japan, but since the Square Enix Store only lists the standard edition here and is selling the merchandise from the special edition separately, it seems we might not get one.

But let’s get into the details.

According to the new information, detailed here by Gematsu, the new combat system lets you equip each team member with a pin to use its ability in battle.

I’ll miss the unique style of the original’s combat system, but I’m sure this will still be fun.

Scanning is back to read people’s thoughts and see Noise, and you’ll be able to chain together Noise encounters like in the original. From the trailer, it looks like directly fighting other teams in the Reaper’s Game will be important, too.

So, let’s take a look at that trailer.

I love the way this game has brought the original’s visual style into 3D. It looks fantastic! The trailer also gives a glimpse of the equipment system, which once again features brands for the clothing and pins.

In addition to the returning characters shown in the announcement trailer, Uzuki is also back with a new look this time. Coco from the new epilogue added to The World Ends With You: Final Remix also appears, so A New Day might be relevant. And the very end of the trailer reveals that Neku is back as well, although what role he’ll play here is left ambiguous.

Strangely, it seems like the new protagonist is able to rewind time, letting you replay the day’s events to change the future. It’s not clear yet how big of a role this will play in the story.

I am so excited for NEO: The World Ends With You. Will it be as good as the original game? I almost feel like it can’t be, because I just love the original that much. Yet at the same time, I can’t wait to see what the sequel has in store for us when it comes out on July 27.

What did you think of the newest NEO: The World Ends With You trailer?

IT’S REALLY HAPPENING!

The countdown ended this morning, and a sequel to The World Ends With You was officially revealed!

Titled NEO: The World Ends With You, it is a new action JRPG coming to the Switch and PS4 in Summer 2021.

Although it is set in Shibuya again, it follows a new protagonist named Rindo searching for the truth behind the Reaper’s Game he’s been forced to participate in.

A boy named Fret, a girl named Nagi, and returning character Minamimoto (playable?!) appear to be the other members of the main cast. Some new Reapers are shown, including a new Game Master named Shiba, and Kariya is also back.

Oh, and “Hype-chan” finally has a real name. The girl shown all those years ago in the sequel tease that came to nothing appears in the new trailer and introduces herself as Tsugumi Matsunae, although it’s not clear what her role will be.

NEO: The World Ends With You is a full 3D action JRPG, and while it’s hard to determine specific details about how the combat will work, there are pin icons visible at the bottom of the screen. Since this game is coming to the PS4 as well as the Switch, I assume it will have a more traditional control scheme than the original.

Meanwhile, the TWEWY anime also got a new trailer and will air in April 2021. With the anime in April and the game following in summer, it seems likely that the anime is intended to help get new fans into the series ahead of the sequel, especially since Nomura tweeted from the anime Twitter account that the new game is a sequel to the anime.

(Some people wonder if that means the anime’s story will deviate from the original game’s events, but so far it looks like a straight adaptation.)

I am beyond excited! We’re finally getting a TWEWY sequel. It’s really happening!

I suppose I ought to play through Final Remix to check out that new epilogue before Summer 2021, but either way, I can’t wait to learn more about NEO: The World Ends With You. What do you think of what we’ve seen so far?
