The first game in the Sakura Wars series came out on September 27, 1996, which means this year will be its 30th anniversary.

Sega has revealed a 30th anniversary logo, along with the promise of merch and events.

It’s disappointing that they haven’t even hinted at a new game announcement for the anniversary, but maybe there’s still hope.

We last talked about Sakura Wars in December, when fans noticed the official social media account had seen more active for the past few months. That hasn’t led to anything yet, but the anniversary feels like a great opportunity for it.

I’d love if they celebrated the anniversary with a remaster collection of the original games (or even just started with the first one) that could get an official translation. I do want to play the 2019 game sometime, but I’m even more interested in the older ones.

Do you think there will be a new Sakura Wars game or remaster for the 30th anniversary?

The Sakura Wars series is one that’s interested me for a while, although I still haven’t played any of the games.

Of the originals, which combined tactical RPG and visual novel gameplay, the only one to be localized in English was the fifth game in the series, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love.

I’d really like to try that one someday, but it’s difficult to find.

The sixth game in the series came out in 2019. It was a soft reboot that switched out the tactical RPG gameplay for action RPG gameplay instead, and it was localized simply as Sakura Wars. I have this one, but I haven’t gotten around to playing it yet.

Now it looks like there could be something new on the horizon for the series. As noticed by fans on Reddit, the Japanese Twitter account for Sakura Wars has seen an unusual amount of activity since September, compared to only sporadic tweets before that.

Could it be a coincidence? Of course. Still, it would be unusual if the series is dead. On top of that, there were rumors last year that a new Sakura Wars was in development.

If Sakura Wars sees a revival again, I’ll finally play the 2019 reboot. Maybe we’ll really get lucky, and they’ll remaster (and translate) the original games!

Do you think there’s Sakura Wars news on the horizon? If so, do you think it will stick with the remake’s style or return to being a tactical RPG?

Sega recently released a new Sakura Wars game for the first time in almost 15 years (although there was a spin-off in between), and now it looks like more is on the way.

As reported by Gematsu, Sega has now filed trademarks for “Sakura Wars B.L.A.C.K.,” “Sakura Ishin,” and “Sakura Kakumei.”

There are currently 6 main games in the Sakura Wars series, although only two have ever been translated into English. The first of those was the fifth game, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love for the PlayStation 2 and Wii.

In 2019, the series returned from its long hiatus with a new game titled simply Sakura Wars, a soft reboot set 12 years after the previous game that also switched to action RPG combat instead of the tactical RPG combat that had been standard for the series.

Although it got mixed reviews, these new trademarks suggest they’re making more Sakura Wars games.

Personally, I hope one of these new trademarked titles is a remake or remaster of Sakura Was: So Long, My Love. I’ve been dying to play it, but it’s difficult to find nowadays. Continuing the series from the soft reboot sounds more likely, though. Either way, it sounds like Sakura Wars has been given a second chance.

Have you played any games in the Sakura Wars series? What do you think these new trademarks are for? Share your thoughts in the comments.
