Operation Backlog Completion 2026

The Sakura Wars series is one that’s interested me for a while, although I still haven’t played any of the games.

Of the originals, which combined tactical RPG and visual novel gameplay, the only one to be localized in English was the fifth game in the series, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love.

I’d really like to try that one someday, but it’s difficult to find.

The sixth game in the series came out in 2019. It was a soft reboot that switched out the tactical RPG gameplay for action RPG gameplay instead, and it was localized simply as Sakura Wars. I have this one, but I haven’t gotten around to playing it yet.

Now it looks like there could be something new on the horizon for the series. As noticed by fans on Reddit, the Japanese Twitter account for Sakura Wars has seen an unusual amount of activity since September, compared to only sporadic tweets before that.

Could it be a coincidence? Of course. Still, it would be unusual if the series is dead. On top of that, there were rumors last year that a new Sakura Wars was in development.

If Sakura Wars sees a revival again, I’ll finally play the 2019 reboot. Maybe we’ll really get lucky, and they’ll remaster (and translate) the original games!

Do you think there’s Sakura Wars news on the horizon? If so, do you think it will stick with the remake’s style or return to being a tactical RPG?

  1. God please yes, SEGA has so many under utilized franchises and Sakura Wars is by far one of the biggest tragedies because of it.
