Operation Backlog Completion 2026

All right, the Stranger Than Heaven showcase provided us with the deep dive they promised, and now it’s time to lay some theories to rest.

There’s nothing supernatural going on. It’s not even a separate universe from the Yakuza series.

In fact, it appears to be a prequel story that will include the origins of the Tojo Clan.

I’m one of the people who didn’t want that; I’d hoped Stranger Than Heaven would be a whole separate IP. So when the new trailer almost immediately mentioned the Tojo Clan, I was a little disappointed. However, the trailer and showcase were so good that I came around on it. I’m excited for Stranger Than Heaven again.

Let’s start by taking a look at the new trailer.

That is a good trailer.

For all my ambivalence when they immediately brought up the Tojo Clan, the rest of the trailer really caught my interest and left me intrigued about what’s going to happen in this game.

Our main character, Makoto, is half-Japanese and half-American. He sneaks onto a ship heading for Japan in 1915, and that’s where our story begins. I’d previously questioned if we were going to visit the game’s different eras in order, and it sounds like we will after all. We’ll be traveling through 5 different eras as Makoto rises up from his meager beginnings.

The subsequent showcase went into more detail about the game, and what really took me by surprise is the showman aspect.

Makoto becomes a showman and scouts singers and performers. On top of that, there’s a gameplay mechanic where you can pick up different pieces of audio, like the sound of a train or someone snoring, and work those sounds into new pieces of music. It sounds pretty detailed, and I’m not sure if this is an optional side activity or actually a central part of the story, because it seems pretty important.

Meanwhile, even though combat looks like a more visceral version of Yakuza combat, it sounds like it’ll be fairly different, because you use different buttons to attack with the right or left sides of Makoto’s body.

One other thing that stands out as unusual about Stranger Than Heaven is that unlike recent Yakuza releases, there won’t be separate dub or sub options. Instead, some characters will speak Japanese while others speak English, just like in the trailer. Infinite Wealth already did that a little bit, but it sounds like this will take it even further for immersion.

So, after all of this, I’m excited for Stranger Than Heaven. The story sounds interesting, the gameplay seems intriguing, and even though it’s tied to the Yakuza series after all, it has a ton of potential. It does seem a little weird that Snoop Dogg is playing a character, but it’s not like they haven’t cast celebrities before.

Finally, while it doesn’t have a release date yet, it has a release window of “this winter.” Whether that means this year or early next year remains to be seen.

What do you think about Stranger Than Heaven?

During March’s Xbox Partner Preview, Stranger Than Heaven received a new trailer and the promise of more information to come on May 6.

Now we’re two days away from that event.

Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven will start on May 6 at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET and last for 30 minutes.

According to the official post about it, it will feature “details and insights on the game’s story, world, characters and more,” including the structure of its 5-era/5-city storytelling.

My feelings toward Stranger Than Heaven have bounced around. When it was first announced, I was hyped. I couldn’t wait to see more. Then, with the Kiwami 3 controversies casting a shadow over RGG Studio, I lost some of my enthusiasm. On top of that, I was disappointed that we only got a trailer in that Xbox showcase, despite it being announced as an “in-depth look,” so that left me feeling a little more negative than usual.

But this sounds like the chance to really learn more about this game and what it’s like. I was originally hoping that it was entirely separate from the Yakuza universe (and perhaps even supernatural), but the glimpse of Kamurocho in the last trailer suggests otherwise. Still, I hope we get some intriguing story details in the upcoming deep dive. I want to see a story premise I can get excited for, like when Judgment was coming out.

The reference to the storytelling structure interests me, too. Maybe we won’t be playing through these eras in a linear fashion. Of all the gameplay details, that’s what has me the most curious now.

Meanwhile, there are rumors that a Stranger Than Heaven build has leaked, possibly for a gameplay demo. It’s unclear if the report is true or not, but beware of spoilers just in case.

What are you hoping to see from Stranger Than Heaven in the upcoming showcase?

We’ve got a strange assortment of topics to talk about today, so let’s start with Stranger Than Heaven.

As we discussed on Monday, yesterday’s Xbox Partner Preview was announced as having “an in-depth look” at Stranger Than Heaven.

Well, it wasn’t quite an in-depth look.

I have to admit that I was a little disappointed when it turned out to be a single trailer along with the announcement that an actual deep dive will be coming on May 6 at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET. The trailer did explicitly confirm multiple eras, however, so that’s something new we learned.

In fact, it confirms 5 eras (1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965) and 5 cities, so it sounds like it will be a pretty big game. The 1965 shot in the trailer also clearly shows Kamurocho.

The trailer didn’t answer most of my questions, though, since I really want to know more about the story. I’m intrigued by what was shown, but hopefully the May 6 broadcast will show a lot more.

Moving on, this morning was the Blue Reflection broadcast announced last week, and although I didn’t watch it live, I woke up eager to find out what the news was.

(Actually, I woke up yesterday eager to see what the news was, too, because I misremembered it as being on the 26th, but anyway…)

There was a new announcement, although not a whole new game like I hoped. They announced Blue Reflection Quartet for the Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC, a collection that includes Blue Reflection and Blue Reflection: Second Light as well as a game version of Blue Reflection: Ray (the anime) that tells “the climactic arc of the anime” with 3D exploration in the Common and a console version of Blue Reflection: Sun (the mobile game) with the main story adapted alongside new characters stories.

It will be out on July 30, although it’s a digital-only release in the West.

Some additional information from the live stream and website, translated and summarized by fans on Reddit, includes the fact that the first game will be censored slightly compared to its original release, which is disappointing.

Still, I’m interested in the Ray and Sun content included in this collection, so I’ll probably get it eventually. In the meantime, I hope this collection is build-up to a full third game, and not a sign that the series is over.

Finally, let’s talk briefly about the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream demo. The demo came out on Wednesday, so I downloaded it that evening and tried it out, and I had a blast. There isn’t much to do in the demo, only create 3 Miis and go through a few basic tasks with them, but I played it for the whole evening and woke up wishing there was more demo content. I’m already itching for the full release after that little taste. If you’re curious about Tomodachi Life, definitely try the demo.

April 16 can’t come fast enough. I’d better get to work on my backlog so Tomodachi Life doesn’t shove all my partly-completed games out of the way. At least it’s the sort of game best played in short bursts between other games (is what I could say more confidently if I hadn’t played the demo for literal hours despite its tiny amount of content).

So, how do you feel about Stranger Than Heaven, Blue Reflection Quartet, and the Tomodachi Life demo?
