yo-kai-watch-2Ready for more Yo-Kai Watch?

Yo-Kai Watch 2 launches on September 30, and the demo is available now from the Nintendo eShop.

(It seems to only be accessible from the Bony Spirits eShop page, though.)

The first game’s demo was an awful representation of the actual game. This demo is better, as long as you do one thing:

Don’t follow the doughnut!

This ludicrous instruction, which makes sense in the context of the demo, lets you experience the demo to its fullest. If you follow the doughnut, you’ll be done in about 5 minutes.

If you ignore the doughnut, you can do several things:

  • Explore the town, fight yo-kai, and catch bugs and fish. The fishing mini-game is no longer identical to bug catching, and it seems like it will be more fun.
  • Fight secret bosses. While exploring, you can find two yo-kai who will challenge you to boss fights. This also gives a better idea of how boss fights can be more challenging
  • Try Blasters. Blasters is a mini-game you can play alone or with local co-op. It’s similar to Terror Time, except you’re fighting oni on the field and collecting orbs to unlock stuff for the main game.

Fighting yo-kai also lets you try out the new battle features, such as the ability to “poke” enemy yo-kai. Poking seems to have a few different effects. I think it might also be tied to the improved befriending system.

Once you’re all done, return to the doughnut and finish the demo.

Yo-Kai Watch 2’s demo is fun as long as you take the time to explore. Have you played it? Are you looking forward to the full game?

Yo-Kai-Watch-2-box-artDuring yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo explained the differences between the two versions of Yo-Kai Watch 2, which will be out on September 30.

Despite their absurd localized titles, Yo-Kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Yo-Kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls are supposed to be much improved over the fun, but flawed Yo-Kai Watch.

In particular, they adjusted the befriending mechanic so it isn’t as random.

Due to time travel antics, you learn the origins of the yo-kai watch itself and join a conflict between two rival factions of yo-kai.

The Bony Spirits faction is led by Arachnus, while the Fleshy Souls faction is led by Toadal Dude. Really, I’m not joking.

Left: Arachnus Right: Toadal Dude

Right: Arachnus
Left: Toadal Dude

A few other version-exclusive yo-kai are also shown, although they aren’t called out by name. For example, it looks like Venoct is exclusive to Bony Spirits while Kyubi is exclusive to Fleshy Souls.

Two special yo-kai are also exclusive to the digital versions, as well. Robonyan F (Bony Spirits) and Sailornyan (Fleshy Souls).

Finally, the first retail run of Yo-Kai Watch 2 comes with a physical medal you can use to unlock a special Soultimate move for Jibanyan.

I’m pretty much set on getting Bony Spirits now, because Arachnus looks great and I liked Venoct a lot in the first game. And while I’d rather have Robonyan F than a new Soultimate move, I’ll probably still get a physical copy of the game. Hey, since yo-kai trading is a thing, maybe someone will trade me a Robonyan F someday!

What do you think: Bony Spirits or Fleshy Souls?

If you’re unsure about the games, a demo for Yo-Kai Watch 2 will be available later this month. The Yo-Kai Watch demo wasn’t a great representation, though, so we’ll see what it’s like. In the meantime, share your thoughts and questions on Yo-Kai Watch 2 in the comments below.

Yo-kai-Watch-2When I reviewed Yo-Kai Watch, I said I couldn’t wait for Yo-Kai Watch 2 to be localized.

From everything I’ve heard, Yo-Kai Watch 2 fixes my biggest criticisms of the first game, since it has a stronger story and makes recruiting Yo-kai less dependent on luck.

We’ll get to find out just how improved it is this fall! Yo-Kai Watch 2 is coming to North America on September 30.

In addition to the improvements I’ve heard about, Yo-Kai Watch 2 adds over 100 new yo-kai, new areas to explore, a better Yo-Kai Watch, and time travel!

Now, Yo-Kai Watch 2 isn’t a single game. Like Pokémon, Yo-Kai Watch 2 has two versions, each with exclusive yo-kai. In Japan, these versions were called Ganso and Honke, each referring to a type of manju relevant to the story. (Yo-Kai Watch 3’s two versions are Sushi and Tempura, so I sense a theme.)

They’re being localized as Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls.

Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls.

Japan received a third version, Shinuchi, which made more changes and let you pick between the two storylines. There’s no word yet on whether we’ll eventually receive the third version, but I shudder to imagine what they’ll call it.

The Yo-Kai Watch toy line is also being expanded, and Season 2 of the anime will air this summer.

(If you can’t wait that long for yo-kai or you want something a bit darker, don’t forget that I have a short yokai horror story called “Rokurokubi” published in Wicked Words Quarterly: Issue 3.

With both Yo-Kai Watch 2 and Final Fantasy XV releasing on September 30, it’ll be an exciting day for RPGs (hopefully Yo-Kai Watch 2 won’t be completely eclipsed).

In the meantime, I have to decide: Bony Spirits or Fleshy Souls?
