Operation Backlog Completion 2026

We potentially have two pieces of JRPG-related news to look forward to next week, thanks to a couple of teases.

First, on July 6, Gust will be doing… something. They tweeted an image of a blue sky with 7/6 on it, with the message “Coming 7/6.”

There is a lot of belief that this could be the announcement of Atelier Ryza 3, due to the frequency of Atelier releases and Gust using the blue sky imagery for Atelier Ryza in the past. However, the Atelier Twitter account hasn’t shared it yet, so maybe it’s something else.

Don’t forget that we still have very little information about the upcoming Blue Reflection games, so this might be additional information about one or both of those.

Or it could be entirely different Gust news. Either way, it’s sure to be interesting.

Meanwhile, Level-5 announced a Yo-kai Watch anniversary live stream for July 9. According to the translation from Gematsu, it will include “a major game-related announcement.”

Since it’s a Japanese event, I doubt this will be the long-awaited localization news for Yo-kai Watch 4 (or rather, Yokai Watch 4++, the latest version) or Yo-kai Academy Y, but maybe an update or the announcement of a new game. I’ll just be happy to see Level-5 announcing things, since they seem to be having some trouble lately.

So I’m mainly looking forward to Gust’s news on July 6, but I’ll be interested to see the Yo-kai Watch news on July 9 as well. What do you think will be announced on these days?

In a new video from Level-5’s virtual Youtuber, it was revealed that the first Yo-Kai Watch game is coming to the Nintendo Switch.

Early reports said it would release alongside the Nintendo Switch Lite, but that might not be the case. Rather, she says you’ll be able to play Ni No Kuni at launch (as the Switch version comes out September 20) and play Yo-Kai Watch 1 later on.

No release date for Yo-Kai Watch 1 on the Switch has been announced yet.

I enjoyed the original Yo-Kai Watch despite its flaws, and although I still haven’t gotten around to Yo-Kai Watch 2, I hope to soon

(I’d like to play Yo-Kai Watch 3, but since physical copies have become incredibly rare despite its North American release being just earlier this year, right now I’m just hoping Level-5 follows this by bringing Yo-Kai Watch 2 and 3 to the Switch as well.)

Since there hasn’t been an official reveal yet, we don’t know if this will be a port or a remake… but they almost have to make some changes to the gameplay due to the game’s use of the touchscreen. Yo-Kai Watch 4, which came out for the Switch in Japan on June 20, made significant changes to the combat. I doubt Yo-Kai Watch 1’s combat will be revamped to that degree, but they’ll need to do something since there’s only one screen.

Mobile ports of Yo-Kai Watch were originally announced and then never heard from again, so maybe the Switch version will make use of whatever they intended to do there.

I probably won’t play it again unless there are significant changes, but it’s a nice opportunity for new fans to get into the series. What do you think about the first Yo-Kai Watch coming to the Switch?

With Yo-Kai Watch 4 unveiled for the Switch and 3DS support winding down, some fans have wondered if Level-5 will skip Yo-Kai Watch 3 in the west.

Since they’re even localizing the spin-offs, that seems unlikely.

Localization of the Yo-Kai Watch Busters games was rumored for a while, and it finally became official near the end of June.

Yo-Kai Watch Blasters: Red Cat Corps and Yo-Kai Watch Blasters: White Dog Squad for the 3DS will be out on September 7.

(The Busters -> Blasters localization change seems to be to avoid copyright trouble with Ghostbusters, as was the redesign of a particular yo-kai.)

The third “version,” Moon Rabbit Team, was actually a post-launch update rather than a separate game. Since the official announcement says “a free post-launch update to the game will add additional side stories, Yo-kai, bosses and missions,” it sounds like that will also be localized.

Unlike the main series, these are action spin-offs where you fight yo-kai in a beat ’em up combat style, either alone or with friends. It’s basically the Blasters mini-game expanded into a full game with new features.

With Blasters on the way in September, everyone is wondering what this means for the rest of the series. Personally, I think Yo-Kai Watch 3 is coming next. If they were only going to localize one more 3DS title, why would they pick the spin-off?

I think they’ll localize Yo-Kai Watch 3 soon and then follow that with 4 (which looks fantastic so far). And since Yo-Kai Watch 4 isn’t even out in Japan yet, maybe we’ll start to catch up!

Speaking of catching up, I need to play Yo-Kai Watch 2…
