On Monday, when we discussed the Level-5 showcase announced for today, I asked if we were excited.

The answer for me turned out to be no, as I completely forgot about it.

In fact, someone had to send me a message asking if I was watching the Level-5 stream for me to even remember that it was today. It had completely slipped my mind.

Considering Level-5 was one of my favorite developers, I guess that settles how much recent developments have influenced me.

But the showcase was this morning, so let’s take a look at what they showed, and be sure to check out the full stream for yourself if you want.

The theme for this showcase was “craftsmanship,” and they began by talking about how the advent of AI has them reflecting on what human craftsmanship is, which would be an encouraging way to start out if not for how much they’ve emphasized using generative AI as part of the process.

Leaving that aside for now, the first game they announced was a mobile puzzle game called Pufflings: Journey Through a Fantasy World that’s also going to have tie-in animated films and merchandise. Next up was an expansion for the mobile game Yokai Watch: Wibble Wobble (which was originally imagined as a new Yokai Watch game before being revamped for Wibble Wobble, so that’s painful, too). Fantasy Life i is also coming to mobile.

Snack World is getting a remake, Snack World: Reloaded for PS5, Switch 2, and PC.

Tiny teasers were shown for the Inazuma Eleven remake and Decapolice, which doesn’t even have a release window now, just “in development.” Holy Horror Mansion also got a new trailer with no release window in sight.

After that, they showed an Inazuma Eleven mobile game and a Switch 2 port of Victory Road, and then it was time for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam.

It looks good, and I really want to be excited. (I had to laugh a little at the trailer calling it “the 7th installment in the Professor Layton series,” though. We’re just not counting Layton’s Mystery Journey at all now.) It’s also now coming to the PS5 and PC in addition to the Switch and Switch 2 versions, with a release window set for later this year.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam got a large chunk of time compared to the other games in the showcase, so it seems like it will be the next major game they focus on now that Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road and Fantasy Life i are out.

This should be a time of great excitement for someone who loves the Professor Layton series as much as I do, but I’d like some reassurance that they didn’t use generative AI in its development before I can feel properly enthusiastic again. Right now, I just find it difficult to muster up excitement.

How do you feel about the games shown in today’s Level-5 showcase?

I backed the Kickstarter campaign for the English localization of Volontés, which we discussed near the end of the campaign.

I actually thought I might play it as my Valentine’s Day game… until I learned that even backers needed to wait until March 26 to get the English translation, despite already having our copies of the game.

So when the translation came, I decided to give it a try and see how this dark fantasy otome is.

You play as a young woman named Fiena, who is adopted into a family in a small village and lives more or less peacefully there until knights suddenly slaughter everyone. She manages to escape and is taken to a magical, isolated kingdom, where she’s declared to be a divine messenger known as the Moon Witch.

To start with, I just want to say that Volontés has beautiful art and music. It’s really a gorgeous game.

Now, getting into the story, your choices in the common route determine whose route you end up on. There are four total routes, with two being unlocked at the start and two more being unlocked as you progress. Each deals with different plot events and revelations, but they all feel cohesive and make sense together, with details in some routes aligning nicely with things you learn in others.

I enjoyed the story in each route, but the romance sometimes felt rushed. Ismail’s route had the best romantic pacing, in my opinion, followed by Mel’s. Both Emmanuel and Olivier’s routes suffered from the romance feeling like it came out of nowhere.

(It’s especially a shame because I love kuudere characters, so Emmanuel seeming coldhearted and ruthless until you get to know him has all the makings of a route I’d enjoy… but it was one of the weakest because of the lack of natural romantic progression.)

Volontés is a pretty short game, so I wish they had slowed down the routes with an additional chapter or two in each to build up the relationships better. I also wish the choices had a little more substance to them, as many of the options feel basically the same aside from whether they raise affection or not.

Choices during the routes determine which ending you get for that route: the good ending, the bad ending, or the “plunder” ending.

The “plunder” endings are similar to what Mistonia did with its “astray” endings – Fiena becomes involved with a different character instead of the one whose route it is, usually the villain of the route. I enjoyed it in Mistonia, and I enjoyed how it worked here, too.

Why doesn’t Ismail have a plunder ending, though? Since Emmanuel’s route had an Olivier ending, Ismail’s had a Melodie ending, and Melodie’s had an Emmanuel ending, I assumed Olivier’s route would have an Ismail plunder ending…

…although what did happen in that plunder ending was so wild I can’t complain too much.

It might be because Ismail never plays a villainous role, but it could have been a more bittersweet ending instead. Olivier’s route having an additional ending for Nil just left me even more puzzled as to why Ismail didn’t get one.

Anyway, I enjoyed playing Volontés despite my gripes about the romantic progression, although I should mention again that it’s short. It took me 8 hours to get every ending, so even if we assume I went through it twice as fast as the average like I do sometimes, that’s still short for a full-fledged otome game. Just keep that in mind.

So if the game sounds interesting and you don’t mind the short runtime, Volontés is available now digitally, with a physical import also available.

Level-5 has announced the next Level-5 Vision, the showcase they’ve held regularly ever since their revival.

It will be streamed on April 10 at 21:00 JST, which is 5 AM PT / 8 AM ET, with English subtitles available.

The stream will feature “the latest news and updates” on their games.

So… are we excited?

I want to say yes. I love Level-5. Their sudden return with new announcements was one of the best Nintendo Directs ever for me, and even all the subsequent delays could be forgiven since Fantasy Life i came out to a great reception (although I still need to play it).

But Level-5 has been frustratingly supportive of generative AI, whether it’s the AI-generated art used in the trailer for Holy Horror Mansion or the presentation where their described AI use included coming up with side quests for Decapolice.

It’s made me worry about Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, even though they haven’t said anything about using AI there.

So, I’m going into this Level-5 showcase with more fears than hopes. How do you feel about Level-5’s upcoming games right now?
