Operation Backlog Completion 2026

February 5 was the 17th anniversary of the original Paper Mario’s North American release.

I’ve been disappointed in the changes they’ve made to the Paper Mario series (although I will eventually give Color Splash a try), but as I was reading comments about Paper Mario’s anniversary, someone mentioned an indie game inspired by Paper Mario called Bug Fables.

I was skeptical at first. I’ve seen other Paper Mario spiritual successors that either just took the paper aesthetic or looked like a complete clone. However, Bug Fables looks like it’s successfully captured the Paper Mario aesthetic while still having an identity of its own.

Bug Fables, which is currently seeking funds through Indiegogo, follows three bug characters (Bee, Beetle, and Moth) on a quest to find a legendary treasure.

It is filled with gameplay mechanics reminiscent of Paper Mario, including turn-based combat with action commands (which are different for each of the three characters), a cooking system, skills each character can use on the field, and a “tattle” system where you can learn more about each location and NPC.

The story will take place across 6 chapters and several locations

If the trailer isn’t enough to convince you, don’t worry. There’s also a demo you can download. The demo covers the game’s prologue, as well as a section after the prologue that lets you check out how cooking, shops, side quests, etc. will work in the full game.

You can even participate in a play, with humorous results. One of the things I liked most about this demo was that the characters’ personalities had a chance to shine, especially since Paper Mario has veered away from that. If the same charm and humor are present throughout the game, Bug Fables should be quite entertaining.

I had a lot of fun with the demo, and I can’t wait to see what the full game will be like. It really captures that Paper Mario style while standing on its own beyond nostalgia.

If you’re interested in supporting an indie RPG inspired by Paper Mario, head over to the Bug Fables Indiegogo page to help them out.

Raji: An Ancient Epic is an action adventure game currently seeking funds through Kickstarter, and it’s currently the final day of the campaign.

Raji: An Ancient Epic follows a young girl named Raji who is chosen by the gods to fight against a demonic invasion, while also trying to rescue her brother. It is set in ancient India, with hand painted environments inspired by the medieval architecture of Rajasthan.

It’s an action adventure game that features melee combat and elemental attacks, with customization for your abilities. It also includes some puzzles.

Raji looks pretty good, but it’s still at only around 50% of its funding goal at the time that I’m writing this. Just over 24 hours remain in the Kickstarter campaign, so it will need a lot of support in the final day to meet its goal.

Since there is a demo available through Steam, I downloaded it to give it a try. In the trailer, Raji’s gameplay seemed like it might be slow, but it actually feels quite good. The customization is limited since it’s a demo, but I look forward to seeing what the options are in the full game.

Aside from one point where the demo glitched and I had to restart (from a very forgiving checkpoint, so I barely lost any progress), it played well and felt smooth.

I recorded it, but I had trouble uploading the video. If I ever get it ready, I’ll include it here.

Anyway, if you like the sounds of a demon-fighting action game set in ancient India, head over to the Kickstarter page for Raji: An Ancient Epic and take a look!

Back in May, I announced that I was the writer for a fantasy action RPG called Destiny Chronicles.

Well, Destiny Chronicles is now on Kickstarter!

We’re off to a good start, but we still need a lot of support to reach our goal.

The current build is using pre-made environment and enemy assets as placeholders, but our funding through Kickstarter will allow us to create original assets, in addition to polishing the animations and combat, fleshing out the world and story, and turning Destiny Chronicles into a game we can be proud of.

Destiny Chronicles is a JRPG-inspired game about a squire named Celeste. When a thief ruins her initiation into the Ashen Order, an order of knights dedicated to protecting the world from monsters, Celeste goes on a journey to prove herself worthy of knighthood.

It will be a character-driven story, with optional party member interactions and side quests in addition to the main plot. As far as combat goes, it is an action RPG. You can see early examples of combat in the trailer.

Destiny Chronicles is currently planned for the PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, although the beta builds will only be available on the PC.

We have a lot of details on the Kickstarter page, and you can also ask me if you have any questions. As the writer, I’m best-suited for answering stories about the story, characters, and world, but I can find out any other information you need, too.

What do you think of Destiny Chronicles? Head over to the Kickstarter page to lend your support or just spread the word!
