Operation Backlog Completion 2025

Just over a year ago, during my review of Sweet Sachiko’s Hysteric Birthday Bash, I mentioned how the upcoming Corpse Party II: Darkness Distortion had been delayed to 2025.

Well, here we are a year later, and it’s been delayed to 2026. (A PlayStation 5 version was also announced.)

The delay is a bit worrying, especially on top of the previous one. Still, it had looked a little rough when it was shown before, so here’s hoping the delays will let them make it into a much better project.

In the meantime, the Corpse Party Tetralogy Pack has been confirmed to be coming west for the Switch. This collection includes the 2021 Corpse Party Remake, Book of Shadows, Sweet Sachiko’s Hysteric Birthday Bash, and Blood Drive.

I’ve already played the first three, and Blood Drive is available on the Switch separately, so I don’t know if I’ll pick up the Tetralogy Pack or not. Still, it would be nice to have a physical copy of the games, and it’s great to see this collection come west while we wait for the new game.

The real question is if we’ll ever hear anything about Dead Patient again…

Are you interested in the Corpse Party Tetralogy Pack? How do you feel about Darkness Distortion being delayed again?

Sometimes company acquisitions make a lot of sense, and other times they leave me scratching my head a bit.

Aquaplus, the developer behind the Utawarerumono series (among others, like the ToHeart remake that came out in June) has been sold by its parent company and acquired by Yuke’s.

Yuke’s is a developer most famous for… the WWE series and a few Earth Defense Force games.

Not exactly the first match I’d pick for a developer of visual novel strategy RPGs.

(Then again, their most recently announced game is Full Metal Schoolgirl, so maybe it’s not such a surprise after all that they’re interested in branching out in directions Aquaplus could help them with.)

Meanwhile, I had completely forgotten about the Monochrome Mobius sequel that was announced last year. I wonder if it’s still set for 2025 and if this acquisition will have any effect on it. Of course, I still need to catch up on the series myself.

What do you think this will mean for future Aquaplus games?

You might remember that back in 2023, Voltage announced three new Nintendo Switch otome games.

Their code names were Project Code Neon Mafia, Project Code Kaleido Tower, and Project Code Vampire Hunter.

The initial schedule got switched around a bit, and the first to come out was actually Project Code Vampire Hunter, under the title Red Bell’s Lament.

Despite Red Bell’s Lament being the one that interested me the most, I ended up not buying it because of the concerns over AI-generated art used for the backgrounds.

There still hasn’t been any clear answer on that either way, which is frustrating.

But now it’s time for the next of the three to be official released, as Voltage (or AmuLit, the brand used for their console games) has announced that Project Code Neon Mafia will be released in Winter 2025 as Neon Clash -Echoes of the Lost-.

The new trailer makes it look pretty intriguing, with a power to give someone else strength by erasing your own existence.

(A different studio is handling the background art, so hopefully this one will be free of AI controversies.)

Of course, I still haven’t played Even if Tempest yet, not to mention all the other otome games still in my backlog. I’m sure I’ll play them all… eventually.
