Capcom Takes Down Dai Gyakuten Saiban Translation

In Japan, Ace Attorney fans are anticipating the imminent release of Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2 with a launch trailer.

Meanwhile, the rest of us are wishing we could play the first game.

As I searched for any hint that maybe Capcom will find a way past whatever issues it has with the localization and bring The Great Ace Attorney to the West, I noticed people wondering if localization is the reason Capcom targeted the subtitled playthrough.

I didn’t know this had happened again, so I looked it up. There was a subtitled playthrough of Dai Gyakuten Saiban on Youtube, and Capcom had it taken down earlier this summer. Why?

Capcom has the right to do so, but they’ve left other Ace Attorney videos–and the Investigations 2 fan game–alone.

Is it really because they’re concerned the videos will harm sales of the first game in Japan? Or is it because they have plans for an official DGS translation after all?

Two years ago I hopefully speculated about the exact same thing, and that turned out to be nothing. We’re probably grasping at straws.

Then again, Capcom might be waiting to see if the sequel does well in Japan… and if it’s a success, maybe an English release is around the corner. Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2 will be out in Japan on August 3.

Over the weekend, Capcom announced Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2, or The Great Ace Attorney 2.

If you’re unaware, Dai Gyakuten Saiban is a prequel starring Phoenix Wright’s ancestor and Sherlock Holmes. Capcom never released it outside of Japan. This new game continues their story and promises to bring all the answers to light.

This shouldn’t be a big surprise, since it was always planned as a series. (Possibly a trilogy, although it’s difficult to find an official source for that.)

For many fans, though, it’s cause for concern. If Japan gets the sequel before we even get an announcement for the first game, maybe that means Capcom won’t localize it at all.

However, it could be good news. One of the biggest concerns for Dai Gyakuten Saiban’s localization is the mediocre reviews it received in Japan.

The main criticism was that it felt incomplete, with too many loose ends. This was because they wrote it with a sequel in mind. Now that the sequel is official, maybe Capcom will localize it, knowing it’s a complete package.

Let’s watch the trailer, subtitled by Bolt2nd, for Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2: The Resolve of Ryuunosuke Naruhodou.

Not only am I interested in the adventures of Phoenix’s ancestor and Sherlock Holmes, but I also want to meet Prosecutor Barok van Zieks. He looks like Vampire-Edgeworth and one-ups other prosecutors’ objections by objecting with his foot.

Seriously, Capcom, we need this guy.

There are many theories about why The Great Ace Attorney has yet to be localized. Some think the game is too Japanese. Some think it’s because of the reviews. And increasingly I’ve seen the concern that Capcom fears western audiences are so sensitive they’d think racism shown in-game toward the protagonist means Capcom is racist against Japanese.

……Really?

But don’t forget, Janet Hsu said it was possible Dai Gyakuten Saiban would be localized after Spirit of Justice. There’s still hope we’ll get to play both Dai Gyakuten Saiban and its sequel.

After our recent discussion of concerns for Dai Gyakuten Saiban, here’s a curious situation that may or may not be good news. Capcom is cracking down on people who attempt to post DGS material online.

On the surface, this sounds bad. We won’t be able to enjoy Dai Gyakuten Saiban videos, which (at least if you could read Japanese) would be one way to experience the story if it’s never brought West. On the other hand, however, this is unusual behavior for a company that doesn’t go after the other Ace Attorney material online.

Cutscenes, walkthroughs, soundtracks… all of this material can be regularly found on Youtube for all other Ace Attorney games.

You can even find full Let’s Plays of Gyakuten Kenji 2 or its fan translation.

Yet multiple users report copyright strikes from Capcom after they posted Dai Gyakuten Saiban material.

For example, Youtube user Bolt2nd uploaded the DGS soundtrack, only to have it removed for copyright reasons. In contrast, his uploads of the Dual Destinies, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, and Gyakuten Kenji 2 soundtracks weren’t touched.

So what’s up, Capcom? Why is Dai Gyakuten Saiban footage not allowed when all other Ace Attorney footage is?

I want to believe it is good news in disguise, an attempt to limit access to footage before the game’s Western release! Granted, they didn’t do this for previous titles, but video uploads might be rampant due to the fear that it won’t be localized.

Why do you think Capcom is being so strict about this game’s copyright?
