A new Final Fantasy VII Remake trailer came out today, and it’s pretty awesome.

The new trailer includes a lot of stuff.

It shows the flashback conversation between Cloud and Tifa, several new scenes of crossdressing Cloud (they must know fans have been anxious about that), another scene with the new character Roche, and a confrontation between Cloud and Sephiroth.

All of these scenes look fantastic. I’m not sure how they’ll work in the new stuff with Sephiroth, but it has the potential to be interesting if they handle it well. I’ve also been concerned about how Roche will fit into the story, but he doesn’t seem bad in the trailer.

The trailer also gives us our first look at Reeve, Scarlet, Palmer, Red XIII, and Hojo.

They all look great, too. Seeing each new character was a delight. I’ve been especially looking forward to seeing what the remake would do with Hojo, and I’m pleased. He looks great!

Great in a Hojo sort of way, that is.

Finally, the trailer features what appears to be a battle against Jenova, confirming that there have been some definite story changes. Some fans have pointed out that Red XIII doesn’t appear in the party window even when he’s seen on-screen in battle scenes in this trailer, so he might not be a full party member in the first Remake game.

For Midgar to become a full-length game, they pretty much had to change some story details, so while it could potentially feel off compared to the original, I’m optimistic that they’ve made good decisions about how to handle these elements.

The entire trailer left me feeling more excited than ever for the Final Fantasy VII Remake, and I only wish it was still coming out in March instead of April 10.

Moving on to Kingdom Hearts, the official name for the Xehanort mobile game has now been revealed as Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road. (I was so close with my “Dark Fall” guess.) I’d hoped we would get more information about the game right away, but we’ll have to wait until mid-February for more details.

I’m still holding out hope that despite being mobile, Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road won’t be a gacha game.

Today, Square Enix revealed a new batch of art and screenshots from the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

They shared two new pieces of art, one of Tifa looking up at the night sky and one of Sephiroth walking through the flames.

This scene is then shown a second time, as their new screenshots of Sephiroth include him inside a building, possibly the Shinra Building, and then a screenshot of him with the fire behind him. There have been a lot of questions about how this game is going to handle Sephiroth since it focuses on Midgar, so these two screenshots raise a lot of possibilities.

First, does this mean we’ll actually see Sephiroth during the Shinra Building section of the game?

I like the creepy buildup in the original of following the blood trail and only seeing the results of Sephiroth’s passage, but I can see why for the remake, they might want to show him here instead.

Second, since the scene with Sephiroth in the flames keeps being shown, does that mean we’re going to see that flashback sequence?

I can imagine them handling this in three possible ways. Either we’ll get brief flashback snippets throughout the full game without seeing the entire thing, they’ve changed when that section of the game occurs in order to show the flashback sequence before the party leaves Midgar, or this first game will actually include Kalm.

Either way, I hope the full flashback is still playable in the remake, instead of being just a cutscene, whether we get to it in this game or the next.

The next screenshots show President Shinra, whom we previously saw as a hologram projection in one of the trailers, and Heidegger. (I thought this was the first time they showed Heidegger in the remake, but he actually appeared in a trailer back in June and I somehow forgot. Sorry, Heidegger.)

We’ve also gotten our first details on the new Soldier character shown previously. His name is Roche, he loves bikes, and apparently his allies find him annoying. He’s also described as being a “3-C SOLDIER turned rebel,” so maybe he’s actually an ally instead of an enemy.

Roche is probably the part of the remake I’m the least enthused about right now. Adding a new character could work out fine, but I’m just not sold on him yet.

There are new screenshots of Aerith in combat, along with the introduction of her MP-draining “Soul Drain” ability and defensive “Lustrous Shield” ability. There are new screenshots of Shiva, as well.

Then it’s time for the Train Graveyard. The Train Graveyard is one of the areas that’s been expanded for the remake, with new dialogue and story content added for this area. That sounds interesting to me. In contrast to my doubts about Roche, I’m all in favor of expanding Midgar with new dialogue and stories to make the city feel more alive, and I can’t wait to see the sorts of things they do.

Finally, the post concludes with some screenshots from the Shinra Building.

Final Fantasy VII Remake looks absolutely beautiful, and I’m really excited to play it when it comes out in March. I had some concerns when it was first announced, but now I’m on board.

What do you think about the latest screenshots? How do you think the Sephiroth flashback will be handled? Do you see Roche as a welcome addition or a potential weak link? Share your thoughts in the comments!

The Final Fantasy VII Remake is just a few months away, and today Square Enix revealed a number of new screenshots, along with new details and comments from the development team.

While the focus of the first article is mostly on screenshots, it also includes new art featuring Barrett (and Marlene) and Aerith.

The screenshots themselves begin by showing the members of Avalanche and the Turks (well, Reno and Rude).

After that, there are combat screenshots showing Cloud switching between Operator Mode and Punisher Mode, and using his Triple Slash attack and Blade Burst attack. Another screenshot shows the menu where you’ll be able to switch difficulties or select Classic Mode.

Another set of screenshots show some of the locations in Midgar: the church, Aerith’s house, and the inside of her house.

Getting back to combat, they show screenshots of Aerith casting Fire and Barrett using Assess to see the enemy’s weaknesses, resistances, items that can drop, etc.

Weapons can also be upgraded, and another screenshot shows us the upgrade screen for the first time. Weapons also have unique abilities that gain proficiency as you use them, as shown in another screenshot. When you have 100% proficiency in an ability, you’ll be able to use it with any weapon.

I like the sounds of this system, and I wonder if something similar will be in place for the regular Materia.

The screenshots also reveal the Chocobo and Moogle summons, pictured above, which is pretty cute.

Finally, we get to see the darts mini-game that was shown briefly in one of the trailers and a screenshot of a motorcycle battle.

Now let’s take a look at the interviews.

It’s really a collection of thoughts and comments on the Final Fantasy VII Remake, but there are a few details worth noting. Nomura, who is directing the game, apparently wanted to do a remake as the final entry in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII and didn’t get a chance. He reiterated that this is a full-length release with lots of content despite only being the first part and confirmed that there will be several new characters (though not main characters) and bosses.

The second game is also officially in development.

Nojima, who worked on the story and scenario, mentioned that since scenes are more detailed and rely less on the player’s imagination than in the original, “the feel of the story” might be considerably different. However, he also thinks players will feel a deeper connection to Cloud.

I’m a little concerned about why he thinks the story will feel so different, but since everything looks great so far, I’m still excited.

Hamaguchi, the game design and programming co-director, mentioned that “respect for the original” is a phrase they’ve kept in mind while making it, and scenario design co-director Toriyama spoke about how they’ve brought Midgar’s inhabitants to life and revived the Honey Bee Inn as a “pantheon of entertainment.”

I don’t quite know what that means, but apparently the original had quite a bit of content that didn’t make it into the final release, including a scene with Palmer, more NPCs to talk to, an encounter with a ghostly version of Cloud, and an employees’ room, so maybe some of these things have been restored for the remake. Then again, maybe it’s entirely new content.

There are many more comments from the rest of the team members, but those are the parts that stood out to me the most.
